Lucas Hernandez was unfortunate with injuries during his debut season at Bayern Munich. The French defender did enjoy a better second season. Ahead of a crucial third season, Hernandez has suffered another injury setback.

Bayern confirmed on Sunday that Lucas Hernandez had undergone surgery for a knee injury that he suffered during Euro 2020. Hernandez was substituted at halftime in the final group game against Portugal due to this injury. He didn’t feature in France’s defeat against Switzerland in the round of 16.

The German Champions have confirmed that Hernandez will begin rehabilitation straightaway after successful surgery. Die Roten has not confirmed the time period for the complete recovery process, but they are confident that the French defender will be ready to train in few weeks after successful surgery.

Lucas Hernandez has a bigger role to play for Bayern Munich next season

Rekordmeister will be hoping that Hernandez recovers from this injury and enjoys a long period of fitness. The Frenchman will have a much bigger role in the team next campaign due to the departures of Jerome Boateng, Javi Martinez, and David Alaba.

More from Bayern Strikes

The 25-year-old center-back is currently the only established left-footed center-back in the first team. The former Atletico Madrid defender will play on the left side of the central defense, forming a partnership with his compatriot and club’s new recruit Dayot Upamecano.

Along with getting consistent playing time next season, Hernandez will also have the onus of becoming the leader at the back. Apart from Benjamin Pavard and Niklas Sule, all other defenders in the team are young, which adds further responsibility on Hernandez next season. The French international has shown last season that he can come up well in pressure situations as he delivered a flawless performance away at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Hernandez was going to get an extended break since he was involved for France at Euro 2020. The Frenchman will miss the entire pre-season due to this injury. Considering the importance of his role in the team from next season, Die Roten will be hoping that the French international will be completely fit for the first league game against Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia Park in August.

Along with Hernandez, it is going to be a big season for Nianzou Kouassi. After arriving from PSG last summer on a free transfer, Kouassi struggled with injuries throughout his debut season. Hasan Salihamidzic has consistently insisted that the teenager will eventually come good for Die Roten.
