Bayern Munich is set to have a smaller squad for pre-season training that will begin at Sabner Strasse at the start of July. The majority of players are still at Euro 2020, with few of them likely to go all the way until the final. In such a scenario, Julian Nagelsmann will have to wait for a training session with the entire first team.

The extended vacation for senior players will open up opportunities for young players to train and impress Nagelsmann. Die Roten is doing everything possible to keep other players for pre-season by denying permission for the Olympics.

According to Kicker, Rekordmeister will not be releasing Ron-Thorben Hoffmann for the Olympics. The young goalkeeper was included in Germany’s squad for the Olympics. Since clubs are not obliged to release players, Hoffmann is likely to report for pre-season training.

The decision from Die Roten will be frustrating for Hoffmann. He had previously insisted that it will be an honour to represent Germany at the Olympics. However, Die Roten will have only have one keeper in Sven Ulreich for pre-season training if they allow Hoffmann to play in Tokyo.  Christian Fruchtl and Lukas Schneller are currently injured.

More from Bayern Strikes

Hoffmann’s future at the club is uncertain. The German Champions activated the option of extending his deal by a year. He will not be leaving on a free transfer. Since he is unlikely to get playing time in the senior team next season, a move away from the club is perfect for him to take the next step in his development.

Meanwhile, Ulreich underwent medical at Sabner Strasse on Monday. He will be returning to the club for a second stint after leaving last summer for Hamburg. The former Stuttgart shot-stopper terminated his contract at Hamburg and returned to Die Roten after Alexander Nubel left on loan to Monaco.

Apart from Hoffmann, Bayern also rejected a request from France for Dayot Upamecano. The French defender will be getting the entire pre-season with the German Champions since he was not involved at Euro 2020. If there were no Euro 2020 or Copa America, then surely clubs would have been more receptive towards sending players to Olympics.

While Hoffmann and Upamecano were not allowed to participate in Olympics, Marc Roca had ruled himself out of contention for the Spanish squad at the start of June. The Spaniard wants to work hard during pre-season to start the new campaign well after a difficult first season. Die Roten will be hoping that his dedication pays off and he comes good in his second year at the club.
