The 2021/22 Bundesliga schedule has been released. Bayern Munich learned what their path will look like as they attempt to win a tenth consecutive league title. The 34 match schedule is set to begin on August 13th against Borussia Monchengladbach. Here are three takeaways from the schedule release.
Borussia Dortmund awaits later in the season
Der Klassiker will take place later in the schedule for Die Roten during the 2020/21 Bundesliga campaign. Last season, the two clubs met on Matchdays Seven and 24. This time around, it will be Matchdays 14 and 31 in which the rivals will face each other. Dortmund will host Rekordmeister in December before making a trip to the Allianz Arena in April.
Dortmund has a very difficult schedule leading up to the fixtures against the Bundesliga Champions. They will have to face RB Leipzig, Stuttgart, and Wolfsburg in the matches leading up to the two meetings against Die Roten.
In total, they will have to play three of the top four from last season during this stretch of their schedule. This could be an advantage for the German champions in the title race as Dortmund may find it difficult to get maximum points in these fixtures.

Julian Naglesmann faces his old club
Leipzig will play Die Roten on Matchday Four which will be the first big test of the Bundesliga season for Naglesmann. His old club finished in second place in the German top flight last season and will likely be one of the contenders to dethrone Rekordmeister during the 2021/22 campaign.
Both of the fixtures between the defending champions and Leipzig last season were very competitive and featured a six-goal thriller in their first meeting. This will certainly be a fixture to circle on the calendar as a must-watch.
Bayern face newly-promoted sides back-to-back
Die Roten will play the newly promoted sides in consecutive weeks. VFL Bochum and Greuther Furth will await on September 18th and 25th and then once more on February 12th and 19th. It’s always interesting to see how the newest additions to the German top-flight fare against the top clubs and these should be must-watch fixtures.
What is Bayern’s most difficult stretch of the season?
The matches against the top four from last season are fairly spread out. For this reason, the most difficult stretch of the schedule for Rekordmeister appears to be when they will face Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer Leverkusen, Hoffenheim, and Union Berlin. Three of these four clubs were able to earn points against Die Roten during last season’s campaign. Frankfurt and Hoffenheim both defeated Rekordmeister and Union Berlin held the Bavarian club to a point each time they met.
Starting and finishing on the road
The opening fixture of the season against Monchengladbach and the concluding match against Wolfsburg will be both be away from home for Rekordmeister. Die Roten did lose in their last trip to Borussia Park but they fared better when they visited the Volkswagen Arena. Both of these fixtures should be entertaining ways to being and finish the season.
