Bayern Munich will not release Dayot Upamecano for Olympics
After a congested season, players across European clubs are having a challenging summer due to Euro 2020, Copa America, and Gold Cup. Along with these tournaments, players could also participate in Tokyo Olympics. One player unlikely to participate in the Olympics is the new Bayern Munich player Dayot Upamecano.
According to Kicker (via iMiaSanMia), Upamecano will not be going to Olympics after Die Roten refused to release the player for the showpiece event. As per this report, clubs are not obliged to allow players to participate in Olympics. The event in Tokyo will begin on July 23 and end on August 8.
Dayot Upamecano already featured in one tournament this summer as he represented France in U21 Euros. Since the dates for the Olympics are not favourable, it is understandable that Die Roten decided against releasing Upamecano. The pre-season window is going to be short with fewer players, so losing another player for Olympics doesn’t make sense for Rekordmeister.
It remains to be seen whether Upamecano will straightaway start training at Sabner Strasse from next month. Few reports in Germany suggest that few clauses in Upamecano’s contract at Leipzig meant that he will be able to leave the club after July 15. In such a scenario, Dayot Upamecano will have to report at Leipzig before sealing a move to Die Roten.

Midway through the season, Rekordmeister had announced an agreement with Upamecano for a transfer. The German Champions will be activating the release clause in his contract, so there were no negotiations between both clubs for a fee. It remains to be seen if Die Roten will hold talks with Leipzig to resolve this minor contractual issue.
Die Roten has been involved in a lot of negotiations with RB Leipzig in the past few months. They agreed to a world record fee to appoint Julian Nagelsmann as the new head coach. Nagelsmann will be replacing Hansi Flick as the first-team coach from July. They recently concluded negotiations with Leipzig for Nagelsmann’s coaching staff.
Dayot Upamecano will need very little time to adapt at Die Roten due to the presence of Nagelsmann. However, the pressure to deliver consistent performances will be bigger in Bavaria. The Frenchman has excelled in the Bundesliga and Champions League for Leipzig, so expectations will be high from the Bavarian faithful.
The Frenchman is likely to play in the back three as Nagelsmann is reportedly planning to introduce a new system at Die Roten. Upamecano should be in contention to start the first competitive game of the season since he will be getting a complete pre-season.
