Bayern Munich has been consistently linked with midfielders in the past few months. Until last week, the German media outlets have repeatedly suggested that Rekordmeister is looking to add a midfielder to the squad to add depth and quality in this position.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez is the latest midfielder that has been linked with a move to Bavaria. According to Sky Italy’s Spanish correspondent Matteo Moretto, Bayern has shown interest in the Spanish midfielder, but nothing advanced regarding a transfer. He has insisted that PSG and Chelsea are also interested as Saul could leave Atletico Madrid this summer.

The reports from Spain have been quickly squashed by SportBild’s Christian Falk. It does suggest that Die Roten probably had an interest in the past, but they are not actively looking at him this summer.

Multiple Spanish reports have insisted over the last few months that Saul could leave Atletico Madrid this summer. He did feature in a fair number of games in the title-winning campaign for Atletico, but the Spaniard is no longer a disputed starter for Diego Simeone. Saul was also not included in the Spanish squad for Euro 2020.

More from Bayern Strikes

The Spanish midfielder is 26, so the peak years of his career are ahead of him. His contract currently has a release clause worth €150 million, but no club is going to activate this clause. Atletico Madrid may have to accept a fee worth one-third of the release clause. Despite this reduction, it is not a financially feasible transfer for Die Roten in this window.

Stylistically, Saul will be a good addition to Bayern’s midfield department. The Spaniard can operate as six, eight, or ten. He has also been used on flanks by Simeone in some games. His passing is tidy, and his work rate is commendable, making him a very well-rounded midfielder. Saul also fits the age profile for a midfielder that Rekordmeister should look to sign this summer.

Rekordmeister will need considerable funds from departures to have a chance of signing Saul in the summer. In another scenario, involving Corentin Tolisso in the deal could also turn out to be productive for all parties.

Even though midfield does look like an area Rekordmeister needs to address this summer, recent German reports insist that winger and right-back are higher up in the to-do list for the transfer window. Saul would be a fantastic addition to the current squad, but it does look like a pipe dream as of now.
