Bayern Munich Frauen one match away from Bundesliga title
By Daniel Garza
Bayern Munich Frauen can claim the 2020/21 Frauen-Bundesliga title with a victory or draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on the final matchday. Bayern defeated Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 on Sunday to remain in first place in the German top-flight which sets them up for what could be their first league title since the 2015/16 season.
After defeating Leverkusen 1-0 in their first meeting of the season, the 4-0 result was a sigh of relief as Die Roten cruised to their 19th victory of the campaign.
Lea Schuller leads the way to victory
Die Roten was led by the tremendous offensive impact Schuller had in the victory over Leverkusen. The forward was directly involved in three of the goals as she finished with two goals and one assist.
Schuller now has 14 goals in Frauen-Bundesliga 19 appearances which is a team-best in goals scored. In her last six league appearances, the Germany international has recorded an impressive seven goals. She has certainly been one of the top players in the German top flight in recent weeks.

Another clean sheet
Sunday’s result was Die Roten’s 15th clean sheet of the season. This is the best record in the league and goalkeeper Laura Benkarth has been in the lineup for every single clean sheet.
The large number of shutouts Die Roten has produced have allowed the club to have a commanding goal differential of +69 which is by far the best goal differential in the Frauen-Bundesliga. Incredibly, they have conceded just nine goals in 21 matches.
A win or draw needed in the final fixture
Wolfsburg won their Matchday 21 fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt which will set up a fairly dramatic final matchday. Die Roten currently leads Wolfsburg by just two points which means Die Roten cannot afford to lose against Frankfurt in the final match of the season.
A win or draw would be the ideal result for Bayern Munich Frauen. Victory would of course mean the title is there’s as they would keep their two-point advantage assuming that Wolfsburg wins their final fixture. However, a draw would likely get the job done as well due to Bayern’s commanding goal differential of +69 which is 23 goals better than Wolfsburg’s current goal differential.
As mentioned, Bayern’s last match will be against Frankfurt. They defeated Frankfurt in their first meeting of the season by a final score of 1-0. Sydney Lohmann scored the match-winning goal in the 64th minute. When the two clubs meet again it could prove to be another closely contested fixture. Frankfurt have not been an easy side to defeat this season as they displayed on Sunday with their narrow 3-2 loss to Wolfsburg. Victory will be far from certain when Die Roten faces them with the title on the line.
