By Daniel Garza
Bayern Munich concluded the 2020/21 Bundesliga season with an emphatic 5-2 victory over visiting Augsburg. The hosts celebrated their ninth consecutive title in the German top-flight with their 24th win of the domestic campaign as they finish 13 points ahead of second-place RB Leipzig.
Aside from the title celebrations, Robert Lewandowski was able to record a historic milestone as he registered a record-setting goal. Here are three key stats from the victory over Augsburg.
Lewandowski sets new record
With the title race wrapped up, the biggest storyline entering the final fixture of the season was Lewandowski’s quest to set a new Bundesliga single-season scoring record. The striker needed to score just one goal against Augsburg to stand alone atop the record.
As the match went on it appeared as if it wasn’t meant to be as Lewandowski was unable to find that crucial single goal. However, in the 90th minute, the moment would finally come as Bayern’s star striker dispatched his 41st goal of the season at the very last.

It’s an incredible achievement by Lewandowski who has reached the 41 goal mark in a single domestic campaign for the first time in his career. It is a remarkable achievement when one looks at the overall stats behind this feat.
The Polish striker was able to achieve this feat in 29 appearances which resulted in a 1.50 goals per 90 minutes average. Gerd Muller’s record has stood for 49 seasons and if there was one player to break this record it had to be Lewandowski. This will go down as an unforgettable season for the Polish striker. Things would have been so much different if Lewandowski was fit for the games against Paris Saint-Germian.
Goals in all 34 matches
According to OptaFranz, Bayern became just the third team in Bundesliga history to score in every single one of their league fixtures. The only other teams to achieve this were FC Koln in the 1963/64 season and Bayern in the 2012/13 campaign. This consistency led to Bayern scoring an incredible 99 goals in the 2020/21 season which was by far the highest number of goals scored by any club in the Bundesliga.
Serge Gnabry reaches ten goals
Gnabry’s first-half goal increased his season goal total to ten goals in the Bundesliga. The goal gives Gnabry five consecutive seasons of ten goals or more in the German top-flight. Despite not playing in seven league fixtures, the winger was still able to register another double-digit goal-scoring season. He continues to be a key offensive player for Bayern and surely will be able to make it a sixth consecutive season of ten goals or more in the 2021/22 campaign.
