After an exile from German National Team for almost two years, Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller is back in the squad for Euro 2020. Joachim Low recalled Muller and Mats Hummels back to the squad on Wednesday. Low is looking forward to using the experience of both players to take Germany deep in the competition.
Low’s decision to move in a different direction was initially vindicated as Muller’s form had plummeted after the World Cup in 2018. However, the arrival of Hansi Flick has completed the fortune of Muller. He has been one of the most creative players in Europe during the last 18 months.
Despite being on the fringes of the team in the initial few months of the 2019/20 season, Muller ended up with 14 goals and 26 assists across all competitions. He was a menace in the number ten/ second striker role for a team that went on to clinch a historic treble.
There has been no dip in form for Muller after last season as he is currently on 15 goals and 24 assists across all competitions. Robert Lewandowski is the main man in the attack for Die Roten, but Muller is the heartbeat of the team’s deadly attack. (Stats courtesy: Transfermarkt)

For Germany, Muller can turn out to be the ideal profile of players to complement rapid forwards in the squad. With Serge Gnabry operating as false nine, Muller can be a perfect foil for the tricky winger. Moreover, the rapid wide players in Leroy Sane and Timo Werner will allow Muller to be the perfect foil in the number ten role since he will always have runners to play those delicate but killer passes.
Moreover, Thomas Muller will also bring much-needed intensity in the pressing. Germany has looked too lethargic in the last few international games. Muller works tirelessly to latch on to first and second balls. He has been often considered as the coach on the pitch, so there will be a significant increase in the intensity of Germany’s pressing and overall play.
Not only forwards, but Muller also has fine chemistry with Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka in the center of the park. The young midfield duo has shone for Die Roten this season, so they are likely to be paired up together for Germany. Moreover, Muller’s versatility is also a fine asset to have at an international tournament. Since he ticks almost every box for a top-class attacking player, it was a no-brainer to bring him back to the squad.
Thomas Muller has been part of two great teams at Bayern and the best German team in this century. His experience and fantastic form are going to be a big boon for Joachim Low’s team at Euros. Even though Germany is still not a favourite at Euro 2020, but Muller’s return surely gives them much more bite to compete against some of the best teams in the world.
