Bayern Munich Frauen moved closer to claiming the 2020/21 Frauen-Bundesliga title following a 1-1 draw with Wolfsburg. Although it wasn’t a victory, the draw ensures that Die Roten remains atop the table entering the final two matchdays of the season.

Wolfsburg could have moved ahead of Die Roten into first place if they defeated the league leaders on Sunday. For this reason, the draw was a massive result for Bayern as they now control their own destiny in the title race. As long as they win their remaining two matches, they will be the champions.

Bayern recover from Chelsea defeat

Die Roten has had to play two consecutive fixtures that have had massive implications on their title hopes both domestically and on the continental level. The week prior they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League semifinal which was certainly a disappointing result as they failed to retain their 2-1 advantage from the first leg. Then on Sunday, it was a meeting with Wolfsburg who had defeated the Bavarian giants in the semifinals of the DFB-Pokal just five weeks ago.

Having already been eliminated from the Champions League and DFB-Pokal, it appeared that Wolfsburg could break Bayern’s hearts once more this season with a victory on Sunday. However, Die Roten Diewas able to prevent another heartbreak as they were able to pick up a point away from home.

They were able to put the Champions League disappointment behind them and retain their advantage in the Frauen-Bundesliga. The 1-1 draw can certainly be looked at as a positive result due to the implications it has in the title race.

Looking ahead to the final weeks

The two opponents that remain for Bayern in their 2020/21 campaign are Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt. These two clubs were defeated by Bayern earlier in the season by a narrow margin of one goal.

For this reason, the remaining fixtures for Die Roten could prove to be difficult. With only a two-point advantage over Wolfsburg, a loss to either Leverkusen or Frankfurt could cost them the Frauen-Bundesliga title. Even though title is in the touching distance, the squad will have to  keep complete focus to get the job done.

Wolfsburg’s remaining two Frauen-Bundesliga fixtures will also feature a match against Frankfurt with Werder Bremen being their final fixture. They defeated both of these clubs in their first meetings by multiple goals.

As a result, it’s difficult to see them dropping points in the coming weeks. Although, a loss or draw against Frankfurt on Matchday 21 would off the Bavarian club the opportunity to clinch the title a week early.
