Bayern Munich decides against joining European Super League
Over the weekend, the noise around the European Super League (ESL) gathered pace despite strong opposition from UEFA, FIFA, and other domestic leagues. Late on Sunday, 12 top European clubs announced the formation of ESL, but Bayern Munich has so far distanced themselves from this competition. Liverpool. Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspurs, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan have signed up for this league.
The German Champions are not part of 12 founding members until now. According to The Athletic UK, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have not given their backing to this idea. Meanwhile, no German clubs have joined the Super League until now.
The reaction to the idea of ESL has attracted a lot of criticism due to the format of the competition. It will have an impact on the competitive edge in the domestic leagues since founding members will be permanent fixtures in ESL, while the other five teams will be getting an invitation.
Die Roten has been publicly vocal against the idea of ESL in the past. The Bundesliga and DFB also released strong statements on Sunday to condemn the idea of these 12 clubs. Meanwhile, UEFA and FIFA have warned that strict action will be taken against players that will be featuring for these clubs in ESL.

The ESL proposal reportedly includes 15 founding members, so three more spots are likely to be filled if the idea has to go ahead. Bayern is likely to be in the thoughts of ESL since they are the biggest club in Germany and one of the most successful clubs in Europe.
Considering how Die Roten made a u-turn regarding sponsorship deals with Qatar, it will not be a big surprise if they sign up for ESL in the future.
It will once again bring more outrage amongst Bayern ultras and fans, which will be totally justified. The idea of ESL will basically create an even bigger financial gap between clubs.
The ideal of ESL does serve the greed of owners since a lot of money will be saturated amongst them. The start of ESL will also have an adverse impact on the transfer market as players would prefer playing in much more lucrative tournament. Meanwhile, Champions League and Europa League will be less of an attraction for players.
As of now, Bayern is garnering praise for their stand of not joining ESL. The real test for the club hierarchy will come if they manage to stay away from it after seeing their counterparts getting a massive injection in revenue. For now, Die Roten deserves the plaudits, but another u-turn will further create justified outrage amongst fans.
