The international break has been kind for German players until now. Players from Bayern Munich have enjoyed a good couple of games with Germany. They will be looking to round off a good international break with a victory against Macedonia later tonight.

Of all Die Roten’s German players, Serge Gnabry had the most productive couple of weeks with Germany. The young winger scored Germany’s solitary goal against Romania on Sunday. Gnabry showed the poacher’s instinct in the box to pounce on the cross from Kai Havertz.

In the game against Iceland, Gnabry provided the assist for Leon Goretzka’s goal. The German winger has been lively in the final third as Joachim Low deploys him as a striker ahead of Timo Werner. Gnabry plays as a natural striker rather than a false nine in this setup.

The German winger has enjoyed a terrific goalscoring record with the national team until now. While speaking to DFB’s official website, Gnabry admitted that he wants to add more goals to his game to help the national team in keeping the winning run.

"“I’m doing my thing, but looking at my goal statistics is a motivation for me. I want to keep this run going. I want to score even more goals and get myself a little closer to a legend like Gerd Müller. When I play for the national team, that’s what’s expected of me. I have to score the goals when the opportunities arise.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Gnabry’s hunger for goals bodes well for Bayern too. The German winger has endured an inconsistent season after a remarkable 2019/20 campaign. He currently has ten goals to his name this season for Die Roten. However, the last few weeks have shown marked improvement in his performances. With crucial games coming up in the next two months, Die Roten needs Gnabry to keep this good form.

Considering the bad news regarding Robert Lewandowski this week, Gnabry will have to play an even bigger role in April. The Polish striker is expected to be out for four weeks after suffering a knee injury while playing for his national team on Sunday. Die Roten confirmed on Tuesday that the injury is worse than the initial diagnosis.

It remains to be seen whether Hansi Flick will deploy Gnabry in the number nine role. He does have experience of playing in that position for Germany. However, there are multiple candidates in the squad to fill in for Lewandowski during April. Irrespective of what role Gnabry plays for Die Roten, he will have to score consistently in the absence of Lewandowski.
