Bayern Munich Frauen defeated Rosengard 3-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal matchup. The hosts took an early lead in the ninth minute and never looked back as they went on to add two more goals. By keeping the clean sheet, they were able to deny the visitors a crucial away goal which makes it more of a challenge for Rosengard to overcome the deficit in the second leg.

How it unfolded

A turnover by Rosengard in the midfield in the ninth minute led to Bayern’s first goal of the match. Klara Buhl created the turnover and Linda Dallmann dribbled into the opposition’s final third before unleashing a well-placed shot that rolled past the Rosengard goalkeeper.

Buhl went from goal provider to goalscorer in the 28th minute as she scored on a Bayern counterattack. Lineth Beerensteyn provided the assist on the goal. That would wrap up the goal scoring in the first half with Bayern taking a 2-0 advantage into halftime.

In the second half, Beerensteyn would score the crucial third goal in the 65th minute. The 24-year-old Netherlands international took the ball at midfield and dribbled her way into the Rosengard penalty area to score her third goal of the season in the Champions League.

Laura Benkarth did not have to make very many saves in the victory. However, when the Bayern goalkeeper was called into action she was superb. The visitors had their best chance to score in the 86th minute but Benkarth was there to make the save from close range.

More from Bayern Strikes

Champions League dominance continues

Bayern has been performing at a high level in all the competitions they have played in this season. In the Champions League alone, Die Roten has won all five fixtures they’ve played in the 2020/21 edition of the competition. One of the big reasons for their success continues to be their strong defensive record.

Bayern has scored 18 goals while conceding just two goals in the Champions League. After yet another strong defensive showing in this match, the Frauen-Bundesliga leaders are looking like a side who are capable of winning their first Champions League title.

Looking ahead to leg two

The second leg of the quarterfinals will take place next Thursday as Bayern travels to Sweden. It’s going to be a difficult task for Rosengard to overcome the three-goal advantage Bayern have created.

An early away goal from Bayern in the second leg could settle the quarterfinal matchup as it would mean Rosengard would have to score at least five goals in order to advance. It’s looking very good for Bayern as they look to book a place in the semifinals.
