Bayern Munich defeated Lazio 2-1 on Wednesday night to advance to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. Goals from Robert Lewandowksi and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting led Die Roten to the win at the Allianz Arena.

Die Roten had entered the second leg of the Round of 16 matchup with a 4-1 advantage on aggregate which presented Lazio with the difficult task of having to score at least four away goals to advance. In the end, the aggregate score finished 6-2 in favor of the defending champions. Here are three key statistics from the second leg.

Limiting Lazio’s scoring attempts

With Lazio needing to score early and often against Bayern in order to have a chance of mounting a comeback, they obviously had to have scoring attempts right from the start. However, this was not what happened and Bayern was able to limit Lazio’s chances as a whole compared to the first leg.

The visitors recorded five attempts which were far fewer than the 14 attempts they registered in the first leg. The scoring attempts just weren’t there for Lazio. Bayern remained focused defensively to complete the job and advance to the quarterfinals.

A record-setting quarterfinal appearance

According to Opta Franz, Bayern has now reached the Champions League quarterfinals a total of 19 times. This is a new record in the competition as Bayern surpassed Barcelona with their progression to the quarterfinals in the 2020/21 season.

This shows the impressive consistency Bayern has displayed over the years when it comes to performing at a high level in Europe’s top competition. Rekordmeister will be hoping to go all the way and become the second team to successfully defend the CL title.

Earning penalty kicks

Bayern earned their 12th penalty kick in all competitions this season. The last time they recorded this number of penalty kick attempts in a season was the 2015/16 campaign. This is shaping up to be a season where Bayern is recording the highest number of penalty kick attempts in the last ten years. In the 2011/12 season, they were awarded 14 spot-kicks. With nine Bundesliga matches remaining and at least two Champions League fixtures, it’s likely they will equal or surpass the 14 penalty kicks from the 2011/12 campaign.

The number of penalty kick attempts Bayern have won has certainly helped Lewandowski in his goal-scoring numbers this season. Eight of his 39 goals in all competitions have come from the penalty spot which accounts for 20.5% of his goals scored. He will need to score just one more goal from a penalty kick to match his career-high at Bayern which was in the 2016/17 season when he scored nine goals from the spot.
