Bayern Munich secured their passage into the quarter-finals of the Champions League after defeating Lazio on an aggregate score of 6-2. The German Champions delivered a convincing performance in the second leg to make sure that the Italian side didn’t have a chance of pulling off a miraculous comeback.

The second league had far fewer fireworks than the first but with the same result. Goals from Robert Lewandowski and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting gave Hansi Flick’s side a 2-0 lead before Lazio pulled a goal back late on through a Marco Parolo header but in truth, the tie was effectively settled at fulltime in the first leg after scoring four away goals.

Manager Rating

Hansi Flick — 7.5/10

Did not have much to do for the tie. The match was just about over after the first leg and he put out a reasonably strong side to ensure no miracles happened. Gave Joshua Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski rest in the second half as he managed his stars perfectly.

Player Ratings

GK, Alexander Nubel — 6.5/10

The 24-year-old did not have much to do through the contest. Could have perhaps come out earlier to meet the cross for Parolo’s goal. Other than that, Manuel Neuer’s back-up had a relatively quiet night.

DEF, Benjamin Pavard — 7/10

The French right-back had another solid display. Good going forward and just as good in his defensive duties. Due to the circumstances of the first leg, had a reasonably comfortable night.

DEF, Jerome Boateng — 6/10

Much like Pavard, Boateng was stout in the heart of the defense for Bayern. Cool and composed on the ball as Lazio’s forwards never really posed much of a threat. Replaced by Niklas Sule at halftime.

DEF, David Alaba — 7/10

Good in possession and controlled Lazio’s forwards with relative ease as he looks to win another Champions League medal before he leaves Bavaria. Did not put a foot wrong all night as he notched a nice assist for Choupo- Moting’s second-half goal.

DEF, Lucas Hernandez — 6.5/10

Again a comfortable night for Hernandez, got forward to help with Bayern’s attack and defended well with what Lazio threw at him. Did his chances of regular first-team football no harm.

More from Bayern Strikes

MID, Joshua Kimmich — 9/10

Man of the Match for me. Controlled the midfield battle as he always does and provided an outlet for his defenders. Is pass to find David Alaba was simply sensational and this type of performance is now becoming the norm for Bayern’s captain in waiting.

MID, Leon Goretzka — 8/10

Again was an important player in Bayern’s midfield. His work with Kimmich is now becoming a real strength as he is dictating matches now. Bossed the middle of the park in another solid display from Goretzka as he seems to grow in stature with each passing week. Won the penalty to send his side on their way after being tugged down from a corner. Becoming a hugely important player for Flick now.

FWD, Leroy Sane — 7.5/10

Another electric display from the German. Always looked to make this happen in the final third and caused Lazio all sorts of problems. Looked like the biggest threat to Lazio’s defense all night. Danced his way past defenders and slid in a gorgeous pass to Gnabry who should have scored.

FWD, Thomas Muller — 6.5/10

Captain for the night and like his other teammates did not have much of an impact on the game, but he didn’t need to as the tie was well in hand already, another solid outing as he continues to make his way back to full fitness. Got an early night as Hansi Flick perhaps had an eye on Leipzig.

FWD, Serge Gnabry — 4/10

A really disappointing night for Gnabry. Did not affect the match and was barely sighted other than the shot he had saved in the second half after a great pass from Sane. Perhaps the fact that the match was already gone had an impact? Either way, it was a poor night from Gnabry.

ST, Robert Lewandowski — 8/10

Scored his 39th goal in all competitions this season with a well-taken penalty. Hit the woodwork again so he could feel unlucky not to have two in the match. Overall another good performance from the Polish international as he continues to bang in the goals.

Substitutes

DEF, Alphonso Davies — 5/10

Came on for the last half an hour and added some speed in the middle of the park, which did not affect the game as much as he would have liked.

FWD, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting — 7/10

Replaced Lewandowski with 20 minutes left and scored within two minutes of coming on. Latched onto a great ball from Alaba and coolly slotted home past Pepe Reina. A quality backup who keeps doing his job.

MID, Javi Martinez — 6/10

Came on with 15 minutes left in the game as he replaced Kimmich. Got on the ball and kept things ticking over, much like some of his teammates, did not have much of an impact.

DEF, Niklas Sule — 6.5/10

Came on at halftime for Boateng and did what he had to do. Lazio never really troubled Bayern’s backline aside from the goal and Sule dealt with them well enough.

FWD, Jamala Musiala — 6/10

Came on with 20 minutes remaining, replacing Muller in the attacking midfield role. The youngster did not impact the game much but it is another Champions League match he has experienced and he will be better for the run.
