The last few days have seen a lot of speculation surrounding the future of Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich. Die Roten is completely happy with the work he has done in the last 18 months, winning a historic sextuple, but the vacancy at the German National team after Euros in summer has led to this speculation.

Flick has previously worked in the German setup with Joachim Low. He was part of the support staff of the German team that won the World Cup in 2014. Since Low confirmed last week that he would be leaving his role after Euros 2020, Flick has emerged as one of the top candidates to replace him.

DFB confirmed in a press conference last week that they will not move for a coach that has a long-term contract at a club without the permission of the latter. This statement from DFB is certainly music to Die Roten’s ears as they would like to keep Flick for next season.

Rekordmeister needed to make a statement  to cool down speculation while going into the important phase of the season. Oliver Kahn did the right thing on Sunday by telling Kicker that the club is calm about Flick’s situation and expects him to stay at least until 2023.

"“I’m relaxed because Hansi Flick has a contract with us until 2023.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Considering the options available in the managerial market, it is essential that Die Roten hold on to Flick at least for one more season. The German Champions will have to evaluate his contract and hand him an extension if he continues to achieve success as he has done in the last 18 months.

RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann looks to be the manager that could replace Flick in the long run at Bayern. However, Nagelsmann is unlikely to move in the summer, while the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino have recently joined new clubs. Germany wants a manager from summer to start preparing for next year’s World Cup, so it is going to be an intriguing situation that can develop quickly during summer.

Kahn’s comments will shut down the speculation for now. Flick also kept stressing on the length of his contract with Die Roten when he was asked about the managerial vacancy in the national team on Friday. Shutting down the speculation will make sure that players and the club are completely focused on retaining Bundesliga and Champions League titles.

Apart from a blip in DFB Pokal in January, it has been a remarkable second season for Flick in Bavaria. His immediate focus will be on the second leg of the round of 16 clash against Lazio on Wednesday. With a healthy 4-1 lead from the first leg in Rome, Flick will be hoping that his players deliver a professional display at home to move into the quarter-finals of the competition.
