Bayern Munich recorded an important three points in the Bundesliga title race as they defeated Werder Bremen 3-1 on the road. The victory ensures Bayern remains atop the table entering Matchday 26.

This was Bayern’s first time defeating Bremen this season as the two clubs tied 1-1 during the first leg at Allianz Arena in November. Here are three key statistics from Die Roten’s 18th victory of the 2020/21 Bundesliga campaign.

Muller shines against Bremen

According to Opta Franz, Thomas Muller has recorded 16 assists against Bremen during his career in the Bundesliga. This is the most assists by any player against a single club in the Bundesliga since this was first kept track of beginning in the 2004/05 campaign.

His two assists were a crucial part of Bayern’s victory on Saturday and he continues to produce assists whenever he goes up against Bremen. These two assists also help him in his quest to finish as the Bundesliga’s assist leader as his advantage grows to three assists. Muller is on track to record his second-highest assist total of his Bundesliga career.

More from Bayern Strikes

Bayern apply the pressure

The number of times Bremen players were dispossessed in this match doubled from the two clubs’ first meeting of the season. Bremen was dispossessed a total of 12 times on Saturday which was more than the six times they lost possession to an opponent in the November match.

The roles were reserved this time around as Bayern were the ones who were dispossessed more in the first meeting. In November, Bremen dispossessed Bayern 11 times while Die Roten only managed to dispossess Bremen six times. The pressure applied by Bayern disrupted Bremen while they were in possession and ensured the bulk of the possession stayed with the visitors.

Lewandowski ties Fischer in all-time goals ranking

Robert Lewandowski’s 67th-minute goal against Bremen allows him to tie Klaus Fischer for second all-time in goals scored in the Bundesliga. It was Lewandowski’s 268th goal in the German top flight and his 32nd of the current campaign. With nine matches remaining this season it seems it’s only a matter of time before the Bayern striker surpasses Fischer.

Gerd Muller’s record of 365 goals is another mountain to climb but surpassing Fischer further cements Lewandowski’s place as the best striker the league has seen so far in the 21st Century. He’s been an unstoppable force throughout the 2020/21 campaign and this will be another milestone in what is shaping up to be the best season of his career.
