Bayern Munich: Robert Lewandowski on track to rewrite the history books
By Adam Schultz
For those of you unfamiliar with German football, Klaus Fischer was an incredible player and he and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski have something in common, scoring goals for fun. Having enjoyed an illustrious career that spanned 20 years with four different clubs, Fischer amassed an incredible 268 goals.
So when the subject of the best striker on the planet comes up, few are as qualified to talk on the subject as Fischer. For many, the thought of Gerd Muller’s record of 40 goals in a single season could be broken was laughable as it has remained untouched for over 40 years since he set it way back in the 1971-72 season.
However thanks to a certain Polish superstar, that record is not only insight, but is in line not to be broken, but smashed. Robert Lewandowski currently already has 31 goals this campaign in just 23 appearances as he has taken all before him with his hat-trick against Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker a stark reminder that Lewandowski has no equal.
It would be fitting for a player of Lewandowski’s talents to break a record that has stood for so long but with the finish line in sight and with only ten games to go, the Polish hitman needs nine goals to equal the record, but will he do it? Speaking to Abendzeitung, Fischer firmly believes that Lewandowski will surpass Muller’s record and do it in style.
"“I am convinced that he will score 40 goals or even more if he remains injury-free.”“He still has ten games. I never thought that Gerd Müller’s record would actually be in danger. It really is unbelievable, a great performance by Lewandowski. He’ll do it.”"

It seems incredible that Lewandowski could better his efforts last season in which he smashed in 34 Bundesliga goals to go with his 15 in the Champions League. However, with ten domestic matches and at least another three European matches, Lewandowski is poised to obliterate not only his own high standards but everyone else’s too.
Currently on 31 league goals in 23 games and just four in the Champions League, although only playing five, his strike rate is simply ridiculous. After his hat-trick against Dortmund, Lewandowski now has 267 Bundesliga goals, just one behind Fischer and he looks set to take down numerous legends on his way to becoming perhaps the best striker in the world has ever laid eyes on.
Lewandowski is on track to break Muller’s 40 goals in a single season, but he might not stop there. Der Bomber’s total goal tally stands at 365, one can imagine throughout the next few seasons that Lewandowski could have that piece of history all to himself, along with records that perhaps might never be broken.
The Polish striker’s immediate focus will be on the game against Werder Bremen. With games coming thick and fast across all competitions, Die Roten will be hoping that Lewandowski maintains his red hot form.
