Bayern Munich Frauen advances to the UCL quarterfinals
By Daniel Garza
Bayern Munich Frauen defeated BIIK Kazygurt to advance to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. It was a dominant display by Die Roten as they defeated the Kazakhstani club by a final aggregate score of 9-1. After a 6-1 win in Kazakstan, the German club returned home to hold their opponents scoreless in a 3-0 win in Munich on Wednesday.
It was a difficult task for BIIK Kazygurt to overcome the deficit that emerged after the first leg. In the second leg, Bayern scored two first-half goals which all but ended any hope the away side had of mounting a comeback. BIIK Kazygurt had been eliminated last season by Bayern in the round of 16 as well as they lost 7-0 on aggregate to Die Roten.
This will be the third consecutive season that Die Roten has advanced to the quarterfinals in the Champions League. They were defeated by eventual champions Lyon in the quarterfinals last season.
This time around they will be looking to reach the semifinals as they did in the 2018/19 campaign. Die Roten is yet to reach a Champions League final and an appearance in this season’s edition would be the first time in club history.

The strong offensive display by the German club over the course of the two legs was a complete team effort. Eight different players scored for Die Roten. This has been a common theme throughout the 2020/21 campaign as goals have come from different sources.
While Sydney Lohmann does lead the team in goals in all completions with 12, there have been six other players that have scored five goals or more. In total, 17 different players have scored at least one goal for Bayern this season.
The strong defensive performances were on display in this round of 16 matchups as well.
Die Roten has conceded just five goals in all competitions this season and allowed just one goal against BIIK Kazygurt. Their defensive record will certainly be put to the test in the quarterfinals and behind in the Champions League. Plenty of strong offensive clubs could await the German club in the next round.
Die Roten will learn who their opponents will be in the quarterfinals on Friday which is when the draw will take place. Fellow Frauen-Bundesliga club Wolfsburg and defending champions Lyon are among the clubs who have advanced to the quarterfinals. The other clubs that have clinched a place in the next round are Chelsea, Barcelona, and Rosengard.
