Bayern Munich: RB Leipzig proving to be a worthy adversary in title race
By Daniel Garza
Bayern Munich holds a narrow two-point advantage over RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga table. After 24 Matchdays the two clubs remain close to one another in the battle for the league title. With the 2020/21 Bundesliga season entering the final 10 Matchdays of the campaign, it appears the title race could come down to the wire as both clubs continue to win on a consistent basis. Here are key reasons why Leipzig is proving to be a worthy adversary in the title race.
Leipzig finding goals from different sources
It’s truly been a complete team effort from Leipzig when it comes to producing goals. They do not have a single player on their squad who has reached 10 goals yet this season in the Bundesliga. After the departure last summer of Timo Werner, they have received goals from many different sources.
With 15 different players scoring for Leipzig this season, the goals have been coming from different positions instead of from a prolific striker such as Werner who scored 28 goals in the Bundesliga last season.
The source of Leipzig’s goals is quite different than what the other current top clubs in the Bundesliga are displaying. Bayern has Robert Lewandowski as their main source while other clubs such as Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg have their star strikers in Andre Silva and Wout Weghorst.
It’s been impressive to watch Leipzig recover well from losing their star striker and turn to other sources for their goals. This can certainly be seen as a strength for Leipzig as the goals can come from anywhere on the pitch.

Turning draws into wins
The final 10 Matchdays of the 2019/20 season did not go well for Leipzig. They drew in five of their last 10 matches which saw them lose a lot of ground in the title race. Leipzig had entered Matchday 25 just three points behind Bayern and was still within striking distance of winning the Bundesliga.
However, these five draws proved to be their downfall as they ended up finishing the 2019/20 season in third place. They finished with a total of 12 draws last season which was the most draws recorded by any club in the top seven.
If Leipzig is to contest the title up until the final weeks of the 2020/21 season they will need to avoid a repeat performance. Those five draws from the final 10 Matchdays of the 2019/20 campaign will have to be victories this time around.
So far, Leipzig has been finding ways to convert matches into victories that perhaps would have finished in draws in seasons past. With just five draws recorded so far, they are on the right track to remaining a contender deep into the campaign and improving on last season’s finish. However, they need to ensure they continue to find ways to avoid settling for draws from their upcoming fixtures.
Defensively strong
Leipzig has an impressive defensive record through Matchday 24. They have conceded the fewest goals in the Bundesliga and lead the league in clean sheets with 12. Their strong defensive unit led by future Bayern player Dayot Upamecano has been very impressive and they are on track to finish as the best defensive club in the German top flight. If Leipzig ends up winning the title then the old saying defense wins championships will apply to this title run.
