Bayern Munich completed a successful comeback against Borussia Dortmund to record their 17th win of the 2020/21 Bundesliga season. Die Roten was down 2-0 just nine minutes into the match but rallied back to score four unanswered goals to defeat their rivals at the Allianz Arena.

The 4-2 victory had many eye-catching statistics and here are the top three from the latest edition of Der Klassiker. Courtesy of this, Rekordmeister remains at the top of the table. Here are three key stats from the thrilling Der Klassiker at Allianz Arena.

Lewandowski gets the job done when he plays against Dortmund

The hat trick performance from Robert Lewandowski gives the Polish striker a career total of 19 goals scored against Dortmund in the 14 times he’s faced his old club while at Bayern. According to OptaFranz, no other player Bayern player has scored this many goals against Dortmund before.

This statistic really speaks to the impact Lewandowski has had on many Der Klassiker outcomes in the recent history of the rivalry. Bayern has won their last five Bundesliga meetings with Dortmund and Lewandowski has been a key reason why they’ve been able to have success against their rivals.

Dortmund struggled to generate chances after the early scoring spree

After scoring their two early goals, Dortmund struggled to generate scoring opportunities for the remainder of the match. They would finish with just four shots and two of those shots came within the first 10 minutes of the match.

More from Bayern Strikes

It certainly didn’t help Dortmund when Erling Braut Haaland left the match in the 60th minute as the Norwegian striker was the source of both of their goals. The visitors spent the majority of the match defending and it seemed only a matter of time until Bayern found the breakthrough goal to give them the lead.

Compared to the first two matches of the season against Bayern, Dortmund did not match their shot output from those two fixtures. In the DFL Supercup, Dortmund registered seven shots and in their first Bundesliga meeting of the season, they recorded 14 shots.

The absence of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Guerreiro was very apparent when looking at the shot statistics for Dortmund on Saturday. These two players normally create chances for Dortmund and not having them available hurt their chances of getting a result from the match.

Haaland continues to show he is a special player

Unless Dortmund and Bayern somehow meet in the UEFA Champions League, Saturday’s match will be the last time they will play each other this season. Haaland will finish the 2020/21 campaign having scored four goals against Bayern.

According to OptaFranz, the last player to score more than four goals against Bayern in a single season was Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2016/17 campaign. Haaland is the real deal and maybe one day he will end up in a Bayern kit. This is a player who has the potential to one day be the best in the world.
