It is quite clear that a couple of central defenders could be leaving Bayern Munich during the summer transfer window. Along with obvious departures, there have been recent reports in Germany suggesting that Bouna Sarr also faces an uncertain future at the club despite joining the club just six months ago.

At first instance, this report can be taken with a pinch of salt for a player that arrived at the club last summer. However, further introspection does suggest that Die Roten having such a stance about Sarr is completely justified.

First of all, Sarr is yet to impress with performances in Bavarian colours. It might come across as harsh to conclude that Sarr is not player ready for Bayern after just seven starts across all competitions. He has not been part of the squad for the majority of this season due to injuries.

However, Sarr’s age might force the club to decide if his performances don’t improve. He is already 29 and has very less resale value, so his poor injury record this season, along with inconsistent performances, may force the club’s hand in looking for a buyer for him in the summer.

More from Bayern Strikes

Moreover, Sarr was never the first-choice transfer target in the right-back position for the German Champions. Die Roten chased the signing of Sergino Dest from Ajax for the best part of last summer window, but they eventually lost out to Barcelona. Bayern scampered to fill this position in the final weekend of the transfer window to complete the transfer of Bouna Sarr from Marseille.

The emergence of Chris Richards could also potentially a big role in the club’s stance on the future of Sarr. The American defender can cover for Pavard in the right-back position as he did early in the season. Richards has gone to Hoffenheim on a six-month loan to get more game time, so the club will be hoping that he takes the next step in his development during this loan spell.

Considering the impact of the pandemic on Bayern’s finance, the club will be open to raising cash from sales to bolster the squad. Sarr might not yield a big fee, but every bit will be helpful in this climate, so the prospect of Bayern considering his departure is not exactly a crazy idea.

With the club withdrawing the contract offer from the table for David Alaba and Jerome Boateng also has only six months left on his contract, the German Champions are showing interest in Dayot Upamecano. A left-back is also going to be on the agenda to provide cover for Alphonso Davies since Lucas Hernandez is likely to be moved in the heart of the defense.
