Bayern Munich: How will defense look like in 2021/22 season?
No fixed full-back pairing
Despite going through a lull (which is completely fine for a young player), Alphonso Davies looks set to be the first choice left-back for Bayern next season. The Canadian winger has completely acclimatized to this position in the last 18 months.
Davies brings the x-factor for Bayern at both ends of the pitch. He has steadily improved defensive positional sense, while his incredible pace helps him to win duels against some of the trickiest wingers. While going forward, his dribbling and trickery help Die Roten to maintain width on the left flank. He needs to improve his crossing efficiency, but as a complete package, Davies is a valuable asset in the left-back position.

Six months ago, it would have been pretty certain who will be the first choice right-back for Bayern next season. Benjamin Pavard was thriving in that role and delivering at least 7/10 performance every weekend. The Frenchman was solid defensively and contributed to nine goals and assists in the Bundesliga last season.
It has been a difficult second season for Pavard in Bavarian colours. He is struggling defensively, and offensively his end product has subdued. Pavard has to play himself into form as his deputy Bouna Sarr has not hit the ground running. As of now, the left-back position is nailed down by Davies, but the same can’t be said about the right-back position.
