Bayern Munich is expected to be active in the final days of the winter transfer window. There will be no incomings, but few loan departures could be anticipated. A recent report from Italy has suggested that there could be a new club for Lukas Mai during the second half of the season.

According to Il Messaggero (via thelaziali), Lazio is interested in signing Lukas Mai from Bayern in the final week of the window. Mai is currently on loan at Darmstadt, so it will be an extremely complicated transfer to complete in such a short space of time.

The report from Italy was confirmed by Sport1’s Florian Plettenberg. However, he also added that the move is unlikely to happen in this window, and Mai will finish the season at Darmstadt. The German defender is highly rated in Bavaria.

Mai made his debut for the senior team during the 2017/18 season. Since then, he has largely played football for the reserves team and trained with the first team. The German Champions finally decided to loan him out in the summer as there was enough cover in the center-back position.

More from Bayern Strikes

The young German defender has been consistently playing for Darmstadt this season. Consistent playing time in senior football is going to make Mai a much better player. However, his long-term future could be away from Bayern.

The German Champions have a plethora of options in central defense. David Alaba will be leaving the club in the summer, but the club is already heavily linked with a move for Dayot Upamecano. Jerome Boateng may also get a new short-term deal, while there are the likes of Tanguy Kouassi, Niklas Sule, Lucas Hernandez, and Benjamin Pavard that play in the central defense.

Mai also has competition from players in the reserve team as Chris Richards has got few minutes in the first team. The U.S international has been training with the first team this season. His versatility across the back four make him an interesting option to have in the squad.

The availability of so many options in central defense will make it difficult for Mai to have a breakthrough campaign at Bayern. The German Champions will be pleased with interest from Lazio in Mai as they can get a fairly decent fee for a good prospect. Bayern should try to insert a buyback clause to secure themselves in the future in case Mai explodes at his next club.
