Bayern Munich: Top three performers in 4-0 victory over Schalke
By Daniel Garza
Bayern Munich registered their second consecutive clean sheet in the Bundesliga on Sunday against Schalke in a 4-0 victory. It was the second victory over Schalke this season and two of Bayern’s four clean sheets this season have now come against Schalke.
This result gives Die Roten their 13th win of the domestic season and a seven-point lead atop the table. With Bayern’s closest rivals for the Bundesliga title dropping points over the course of the weekend, the opportunity was taken to extend their lead at the top. Here are the top three performers from the 4-0 win.
Joshua Kimmich
A hat trick of assists from Kimmich played a massive role in getting Bayern another victory over Schalke. This was the best performance from the midfielder since returning from injury in December and it was his third multi-assist performance of the campaign.
Kimmich set up both of Thomas Muller’s goals in the first and second half, which included a pinpoint cross from a free-kick that gave Bayern a much-needed set-piece goal. The best moment from his performance was the long ball he played to Robert Lewandowski to set up the striker’s 54th-minute goal. In total, Kimmich registered eight key passes and six of his nine crosses found a teammate.

Thomas Muller
It was a two-goal performance from the veteran playmaker whose goal total now stands at nine in the Bundesliga. Muller has done very well for Bayern over the course of the last week. The 31-year-old recorded a goal and an assist in the Matchday 16 fixture against Freiburg and added to his impressive season goal total with the two goals against Schalke. Muller continues to be the main offensive contributor behind Lewandowski for Bayern this season. This was his third two-goal performance of the 2020/21 Bundesliga season.
Manuel Neuer
The Bayern goalkeeper set a Bundesliga record with the clean sheet result. Neuer surpasses Oliver Kahn for the most clean sheets in the Bundesliga with his 197th shutout being recorded on Sunday. Impressively, Neuer achieved this record in just 423 games. It took Kahn 557 games in the German top flight to achieve this record.
As far as his performance in this match, Neuer had another terrific outing. His best moment came in the 11th minute when he saved a close-range header from Mark Uth to deny Schalke an opening goal. Neuer finished the match with a total of three saves to register his fourth clean sheet of the season.
