Bayern Munich: Three key stats from narrow victory over Augsburg
By Daniel Garza
Bayern Munich earned a narrow 1-0 victory over Augsburg on Matchday 17. This result was the first clean sheet Die Roten have recorded since Matchday Five against Eintracht Frankfurt. The victory was Bayern’s 12th win of the Bundesliga season and it allows them to remain four points ahead of RB Leipzig at the top of the table.
With Bayern atop the league at the halfway point of the domestic season, they appear poised to claim another Bundesliga title. The performance was not vintage, but it was much-needed win. Here are three key stats from the victory over Augsburg.
Disrupting Augsburg’s passing
Bayern did well to disrupt Augsburg’s passing throughout the match. The hosts completed 73.8% of their passes compared to Bayern’s 85.7%. This was due in part to the number of interceptions Bayern registered in this match.
According to Football Reference, Die Roten has recorded a total of 146 interceptions so far this season in the Bundesliga and 20 of those were recorded against Augsburg. The 20 interceptions in the victory were above what Bayern have been averaging per match, which is 8.6 interceptions per match. This was a key reason why Augsburg struggled to stay in possession.

Finishing chances from corner kicks
There were a total of seven corner kicks for Bayern in this match and none resulted in a goal. They have been struggling to score from set-pieces as a whole so far this season as they have registered just four goals from set-pieces in the Bundesliga.
According to WhoScored, Bayern ranks ninth in the German top flight in goals from set-pieces. If Bayern can begin to convert their corner kick opportunities into goals, then it will open up another source of goals which will only cause more headaches for opposing clubs when it comes to stopping the Bayern attack.
Bayern out tackle their opponents
Another key defensive stat from this victory was Bayern out tackling their opponents 21 to 15. Augsburg had just 39% of the possession but Die Roten did well to frustrate the hosts with constant pressure. In fact, they did register a higher successful pressure percentage of 28.7% compared to Augsburg’s 27.1%.
The clean sheet was a complete team effort and Bayern does deserve plenty of praise for holding Augsburg to no shots on target from open play. Augsburg’s best opportunity of the fixture was their penalty kick attempt that hit the post. Aside from the penalty kick attempt, they struggled to create high-quality scoring chances, Hopefully, there will be more clean sheet performances to come this season.
