Bayern Munich: Five key players for away match against Augsburg
By Daniel Garza
Bayern Munich travels to Augsburg for a Matchday 17 clash in the Bundesliga. The visitors will be looking for a victory this time around after settling for a draw when they visited Augsburg during the 2019/20 campaign.
Bayern should have an advantage over Augsburg as they have been the better attacking team so far this season. Die Roten have scored 31 more goals than their opponents entering this match. As a result, Bayern’s attacking players should play a major role in this fixture. Here are five key players for Bayern Munich against Augsburg on Wednesday.
Kingsley Coman
The Bayern winger is searching for his first goal and assist of 2021 and this match provides the perfect opportunity for Coman to make an impact. He could be going against Augsburg’s talented right-back Reece Oxford on Wednesday, which provides a challenge that may lead to Coman rising to the occasion and delivering a fantastic performance. Keep an eye on this matchup as Coman could produce another top-class performance this season.
Robert Lewandowski
Bayern’s leading goal scorer has been scoring goals left and right over the course of the season in the Bundesliga. He’s registered at least one goal in his last six league appearances and can increase his season’s total of 21 goals against Augsburg.
Lewandowski has scored three goals in his last three Bundesliga appearances against Augsburg. The Polish striker will likely be back on the scoresheet in this one as he continues his incredible 2020/21 campaign.

Alphonso Davies
Davies may encounter Daniel Caligiuri in this match on many occasions. The Augsburg right midfielder is a difficult player to play against as he currently leads the Bundesliga in pressures and is among the top 10 in tackles.
Davies likes to get forward at times and he will have Caliguri there trying to stop him. The Bayern left-back will have to be careful in possession as Caliguri could create turnovers that lead to opportunities for Augsburg. The Canadian full-back has somewhat looked like back to his best in the last few games, so it will be interesting to see how he does well against Caliguri.
Leroy Sane
It’s been a great start to 2021 for Sane. The winger has at least a goal or an assist in all four of his appearances since the start of the new year. He will certainly have the opportunity to continue to produce when Bayern face Augsburg on Wednesday. Sane is beginning to find good form and Bayern can only benefit from the winger’s strong performances.
David Alaba
Alaba and Bayern’s backline were able to recover well against Freiburg after losing back-to-back fixtures. They did not allow a goal from open play and limited the opportunities Freiburg were able to produce. Alaba in particular had a strong performance as he led Bayern with four interceptions and five clearances. Augsburg is not a club that creates many opportunities and if Alaba can help shut down their attack then there’s really no way to see them getting even a point out of this fixture. This has the potential to be a match where Bayern pick up a much-needed clean sheet.
