The top three performers from Bayern Munich’s 3-2 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

It was a difficult match for Bayern Munich on Friday night at Borussia-Park. Die Roten suffered their second loss of the 2020/21 Bundesliga season after leading 2-0 in the first half. Borussia Mönchengladbach scored three unanswered goals to record a massive three points at home.

It was the second time this season that the German Champions suffered league defeat away from home. The victory for Mönchengladbach gives them a 4-3 record against Bayern in their last seven Bundesliga meetings. Mönchengladbach remains a club that Bayern have struggled to register victories against. Here are the top three performers from the match.

Robert Lewandowski

For the fifth consecutive Bundesliga match, Robert Lewandowski found the back of the net for Bayern. He converted a first-half penalty kick to register his 20th goal of the season in the German top flight. The Polish striker is on course to have a chance of breaking Gerd Muller’s record of 40  goals in a single Bundesliga campaign.

Although this match brought his three-match run of two-goal performances to an end, he continues to be in incredible form and the goals keep coming from the star striker. He remains on pace for scoring more than 40 goals in the Bundesliga this season.

More from Bayern Strikes

Leroy Sane

After a great performance against Mainz on matchday 14, Sane followed up with another strong appearance. The winger registered an assist on Leon Goretzka’s goal in the first half to increase his season total to four assists. He also registered three shots and three key passes in the loss to Mönchengladbach.

Sane has looked great since returning from the very brief winter break. This is the second time this season he has registered a goal or an assist in back-to-back matches. The last time he achieved this was in November. Hopefully, he can continue to record goals and assists in the weeks to come.

Leon Goretzka

Goretzka made his first appearance in the starting 11 in 2021. The midfielder made the most of his first start of the year by scoring a terrific goal for Bayern. A strike from outside of the penalty area left Mönchengladbach’s goalkeeper rooted to the spot. This goal was Goretzka’s second of the Bundesliga season. The last time he scored in a Bundesliga match was on matchday one against Schalke.

Defensively, the midfielder led Bayern with four interceptions, which included an interception that led to his goal in the first half. When it came to passing, he led the way for Die Roten by completing 100% of his passes. This was the second consecutive match he has completed all of his attempted passes.
