Bayern Munich will not be making major signings in January.

It has been a quiet first eight days of the winter transfer window across Europe. Top clubs across Europe are yet to do significant transfer business. Bayern Munich has a couple of areas to address in the current squad, but it is looking unlikely that they will be signing anyone this summer.

A few weeks ago, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitted that the financial state of Bayern is fine, but big transfer fees are unlikely to be the norm next summer. On the back of such comments, it was always unlikely that transfers were likely in the January transfer window.

In terms of departures, Die Roten will have to be ready to find replacements for David Alaba and Javi Martinez in the summer. Both players are free to talk to interested clubs as they enter the final six months of their current contracts in Bavaria.

Hansi Flick is often vocal about transfers. In the past, he has not been hesitant about urging the club publicly for new deals. On Thursday, Flick admitted in his pre-match conference (via Goal) that he is happy with the squad and there will not be any incomings this month.

"“Let me be very clear about this: the current situation affects all clubs in the world. It’s not an easy situation with corona. I’d like to be clear: I don’t want to demand new players. I know the situation at Bayern Munich; I know it’s very difficult at the moment.”“The squad we have here at our disposal is the squad we’ll have until the end of the season.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

No spending in January has not stopped Bayern from working for deals that can be done in summer. After the Daily Telegraph, The Athletic in the UK is also reporting that Die Roten is working on a deal to sign Omar Richards from Reading in summer. The 22-year-old full-back is free to negotiate with clubs since he entered the final six months of his contract at Reading.

Die Roten should have also looked to bolster the central defense by putting the groundwork for Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig. However, Richards’ arrival will mean that Lucas Hernandez will replace Alaba in central defense. Apart from central defense, Bayern may need to improve central midfield options next summer.

Since Bayern is working on a deal like Richards, it is likely that they will be creative in the summer transfer window. Loan deals with an option to buy would be the norm, while free transfers could also help in strengthening the squad.

Along with future moves for Alaba and Martinez, Bayern will also look to sort the immediate future of Joshua Zirkzee this month. The young forward is struggling to get playing time in Bavaria, so a loan move would help him to get his development on track.
