Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus reveals reasons behind the club’s success in 2020.

Apart from FIFA’s best awards, all other outlets have awarded the best coach of the year award to Hansi Flick. The German manager has been the most successful manager on the planet in the last 12 months. Since he got the reins of the first team in November last year, Flick has steadily improved Bayern Munich.

The German media has been raving plaudits of Flick for the majority of this season. He is reportedly one of the prime candidates to replace Joachim Low when he leaves the German National team in the future.

Lothar Matthaus has been also impressed with the work done by Flick in Bavaria during his brief stint. The former German international also believes that Flick was very unfortunate to miss out on the best coach of the year award.

In his recent column for Sky Sports (via SportBild), Mathaus revealed reasons behind Bayern’s success under Flick. The former German defender believes that Flick’s astute man-management has played a big role in collective success.

"“In my eyes the secret of this success lies in the harmony, cohesion, calmness and the way Hansi Flick treats his players.”“The way Hansi touched this team, no coach in Munich has ever succeeded. The most amazing thing is that he did it in just one year.”"

Flick was sticking with a fixed set of players when he got the job to make sure that there is continuity in performances and results. Despite lack of playing time, fringe players were singing praises of the German manager last season. Moreover, his handling of Thomas Muller, Alphonso Davies, and Jerome Boateng showed that he could get the best out of older and younger players.

Along with being a good man-manager, Flick is a clever tactician. He managed to set his team perfectly against some of the biggest clubs in Europe during the Champions League run last season. The German manager guided his team to a 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the group stages of CL this season.

The next test for Flick is to keep this group of players hungry for more success. They have not shown any signs of slowing down this season, but teams have been taking advantage of their weaknesses. It is now up to the manager to tweak systems and outwit managers.

Die Roten faces the daunting task of emulating last season’s success. No club in Europe has managed to win back-to-back trebles, so Flick has a big challenge this season. Until Hinrunde, he has managed the team well, but there is enough firepower in this team to destroy teams late in the season.
