Bayern Munich reportedly keeping a close eye on the situation of Frenkie De Jong at Barcelona.

Bayern Munich is known for its meticulous and effective approach in the transfer window. They go about their business ruthlessly, getting the first-choice transfer targets almost every time. However, they have also shown in the last few years that they are flexible and open to opportunistic signings too.

The next summer transfer window could turn out to be one where they have the opportunity to sign one of the best young midfielders in Europe. According to Mundo Deportivo, Bayern remains interested in signing Frenkie De Jong, and the German club has been in contact with the player’s agent.

Barcelona is currently going through a difficult phase financially due to the pandemic and the poor transfer decisions they made in the recent past. De Jong could turn out to be the player they would have to sacrifice to settle the books next summer if fans don’t return to Camp Nou soon.

Goal also confirmed that the Spanish club fears that they will have to accept an offer for De Jong next summer. Meanwhile, ESPN reports that the likelihood of De Jong moving to Bavaria is minimal despite the financial problems of the Catalan club. Die Roten were linked with a move for De Jong and Matthijs De Ligt in the past.

Should Bayern grab this opportunity and sign De Jong? The answer is Yes. A player of De Jong’s ability can always improve the quality of top teams. Die Roten has a good group of midfielders at the club, but De Jong can certainly take them to the next level.

The Dutch midfielder can be the ideal replacement for Thiago Alcantara, bringing the guile and vision to the center of the park. De Jong can play defense splitting passes to find forwards making darting runs in the vacant space behind back four.  Die Roten has plenty of wide players that make runs behind. He can play in both central midfield and holding midfield positions.

Joshua Kimmich will also compliment De Jong perfectly as he did with Thiago. The German international will form the engine of the midfield, combining tenacity and his high technical ability on the ball. Most importantly, Die Roten will have two brilliant midfielders during the peak years of their career.

The transfer fee will be huge for De Jong as Barcelona is unlikely to take a loss on the €75 million fee they paid to Ajax 18 months ago. It will be money well spent for Die Roten as De Jong is young and going to get better with every passing season. Provided there are finances to complete such a transfer, it is a no-brainer for Bayern to explore this possibility next summer.
