Bayern Munich will have left-back sorted for a long time due to the commitment of  Davies.

There could have been a big dilemma for Bayern Munich regarding the contract situation of David Alaba if Alphonso Davies had not excelled in the left-back position last season. The Canadian winger has turned out to be a fine addition to the squad. His emergence had made sure that the club will have a solid left-back after Alaba’s departure.

Die Roten had beaten competition from various European clubs to sign Davies from Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018. The German club paid a record fee at that time for a player from MLS. He spent six months in MLS before completing the move in January 2019.

The Canadian winger was slowly eased into the first team, along with getting necessary playing time with the reserves team. He did open his account for Die Roten in the final phase of the 2018/19 campaign, but consistent playing time was a far-fetched idea at that time.

The start of the 2019/20 season was also slow for Davies before getting a start in the left-back position during October. Since then, he has not looked back and established himself as an important player for Die Roten. While speaking to World Soccer this week, Davies confirmed that he wants to stay in Bavaria for a long time.

"“I want to stay in Germany and with Bayern for as long as possible. I arrived in Europe with so many dreams and already Bayern have helped me achieve many of them. But I am just getting started – there will be many more.”"

Davies also said that the transition from left winger to left-back has not been difficult for him. His marauding runs on the left flank gave Bayern another dimension in the attack. His blistering pace also came to his rescue while defending. At the biggest stage in the Champions League, Davies showed composure to deliver good performances.

The Canadian winger was rewarded for his consistent performances with a new contract in April. Considering Alaba looks on his way, Davies looks set to be the long term left-back for the team. His determination to taste more success in Bavaria is music to the ears of Bayern fans as he still has at least ten years at the top level.

It has been a difficult start to the 2020/21 season for Davies. Hansi Flick has been eager to manage his workload as there is always a risk of burning out a teenager by playing every week. Moreover, there has been no pre-season this season due to a quick turnaround from last season.

Along with truncated playing time, Davies also suffered a serious injury against Eintracht Frankfurt in October. It was initially estimated that Davies would be back in late December, but the Canada international started training on the grass last week. Bayern fans will be hoping that he returns soon and get back to his best form. He has a big role to play in the club’s short-term and long-term plans.
