Bayern Munich: Top three performers in Austria against RB Salzburg

The top three performers from Bayern Munich’s victory over Red Bull Salzburg.

It was another victory for Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League. A flurry of goals in the final quarter-hour of the match secured a 6-2 win over Red Bull Salzburg. The reigning European champions retained their perfect record in the group stage and move closer to clinching a place in the knockout rounds. At the end of the matchday three, Bayern has a five-point gap back to second-place Atletico Madrid.

The big victory extended their record winning streak in the Champions Leauge to 14 matches. Additionally, they have won 15 consecutive away matches in European competitions.

With a total of six goals being scored by Die Roten, there many contributors to the winning effort. Five different players registered goals in what was a complete team effort to achieve victory away from home. Here are the top three performers from the victory over Salzburg.

Robert Lewandowski

Bayern’s star striker had his best Champions League performance of the 2020/21 campaign so far. He recorded two goals to lead the way for Bayern in terms of goal scoring and registered four key passes. Lewandowski’s two-goal performance increases his season goal total for Bayern to 12 goals in nine appearances in all competitions.

After finishing as the top scorer in the Champions League last season, Lewandowski was able to begin his defense of the Golden Boot against Salzburg. Although he does not currently lead the Golden Boot race, he will have more opportunities in the matchdays to come to increase his total.

Joshua Kimmich

Kimmich was dishing out the assists for Bayern in this match. The midfielder finished with two assists which included his delivery to Jerome Boateng who scored what proved to be the match-winning goal. He also assisted on Leroy Sane’s goal that made it a 4-2 advantage for Bayern. Kimmich is up to three total assists in the Champions League and has 10 assists in all competitions so far this season. Currently, he is tied for second place for the most assist in the Champions League this season.

Lucas Hernandez 

The left-back scored his first goal of the season and finished with five key passes. Hernandez also led Bayern with five tackles. It was one of the best performances the French international has displayed so far in the 2020/21 campaign. He continues to perform well at left-back as Bayern deal with the absence of Alphonso Davies.
