Bayern Munich manager sets up a new challenge in front of Kingsley Coman.

The Champions League campaign began on a strong note for Bayern Munich. The German Champions clinched an emphatic 4-0 win against Atletico Madrid in the first group game of the season. A strong performance against one of the top teams in Europe sets the tone for the European campaign.

There were many good takeaways from the performance against the Spanish club. Every player performed well on Wednesday, but some of them clearly stood out. Kingsley Coman was one of these players that had a big role to play in the result against Atletico.

Coman opened the scoring on Wednesday with a fine finish in the first half. The French winger created the second goal by finding Leon Goretzka in the box. He rounded off a positive performance by showing great composure in a one vs one situation to score his second goal of the game.

The French winger was heavily linked with Manchester United, but Die Roten never intended to listen to offers for him. Speaking to media on Wednesday (via Firstpost), Hansi Flick urged Coman to kick on and show more consistency in his performances.

"“We said to him: ‘This is the benchmark’, and that is how he will be measured in the next games.”“It is important that he not only creates but also scores goals. This is also part of playing in the Bundesliga – you have to expect the same from a player of his quality in the other competitions. That’s what we will be looking at closely in the next few weeks.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Coman has already written his name in the history of the club after scoring the winner against Paris Saint-Germain in the CL final last season. The French winger has endured mixed time in Bavaria since arriving in 2015.  Injuries have hampered his progress every year, but the club kept faith in him and completed a permanent transfer from Juventus.

The French international has been often criticised for being less productive in the final third. He is able to isolate the full-back with his pace and trickery, but the final pass is often disappointing. Coman had a relatively injury-free season last year. He managed to contribute to 15 goals across all competitions. (Stats courtesy: Transfermarkt)

Die Roten will be hoping that Coman takes the next step in his development and targets at least 25 goal contributions across all competitions this season. He will be able to achieve that target by remaining injury-free and achieve a respectable consistency in performances.

Coman had welcomed the competition for places in the squad. He will be fighting with Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, and Douglas Costa for a place in the lineup. Flick will be hoping that healthy competition will push all four of them to deliver throughout the season.
