Farewell to top quality players

The biggest and painful departure for Die Roten this summer was that of Thiago Alcantara. The Spanish midfielder made a u-turn at the last moment regarding the new deal as everything was reportedly agreed between both parties. Thiago was eager to take up a new challenge in his career.

Liverpool was the destination for Thiago from day one. There was interest reported from other clubs, but Thiago had reportedly set his eye on a move to Merseyside. The Premier League Champions eventually agreed to a fee with Die Roten in mid- September to complete the transfer. Thiago was pivotal in winning the treble, so his void will be very difficult to fill.

Sven Ulreich left the club late in the window. The German goalkeeper moved to Hamburger SV on a free transfer last week. Ulreich was set to become a third-choice goalkeeper after the arrival of Nubel, so it was the right decision for him to part ways with the club.

More from Bayern Strikes

Philippe Coutinho also left the club after his loan spell came to an end after the Champions League win in Lisbon. The Brazilian had the most productive year of his career, but Die Roten were never going to exercise the option to buy him permanently since it was a big investment. Alvaro Odriozola also returned to Real Madrid after an unsuccessful loan spell in Bavaria. The Spaniard has the medals to show, but he got very little playing time since joining the club in January.

Ivan Perisic went back to Inter Milan after the loan deal expired. The German club were in talks to sign him permanently from Inter, but the two clubs couldn’t reach an agreement regarding the transfer fee. Perisic also played a big role in the treble-winning campaign, coming up with goals and assists in big games.
