Corentin Tolisso will be a pivotal player for Bayern Munich this season.

Things move quickly in football. Just before the lockdown, it looked certain that Corentin Tolisso is likely to be the star player to leave Bayern Munich this summer. The French midfielder was struggling to get a decent amount of playing time under Hansi Flick.

Tolisso was behind Thiago Alcantara, Joshua Kimmich, and Leon Goretzka in the midfield department. He was not even getting minutes from the bench. Five months later, the composition of midfield has changed in Bavaria, and Tolisso looks certain to be staying at the club.

Thiago has left the club for Liverpool, while the club is in no rush to sign a replacement for him this summer. Tolisso is still not the preferred option in the midfield, but he will get more minutes on the pitch than last season. Flick trusts Kimmich and Goretzka to bring the balance in midfield that Thiago brought during the treble-winning campaign.

On Friday, Tolisso came on against Schalke at the start of the second half. There was nothing spectacular about his performance, but he kept on things ticking in the midfield. Speaking to Canal plus this week (via Goal), Tolisso admitted that he was thinking about leaving the club last season, but he is now determined to succeed in Bavaria.

"“It’s true that we were asking questions, especially in January when I hardly played at all. It was the transfer period, the Euro was supposed to be played in June, a lot of questions were in my head.”“As for the transfer period in June, July, August, September, I was not wondering, I knew I wanted to stay at this wonderful club.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Tolisso can play in a deeper role like Thiago. However, he will act more like a destroyer rather than a spectacular passing range that the Spaniard had. It is not a criticism of Tolisso since Thiago is one of the best deep-lying midfielders in the world.

The French midfielder can be a lethal weapon for the European champions in the number eight role. Goretzka and Kimmich have shown flexibility to play in the number six position, so Tolisso can be utilized as a box to box midfielder and number ten. The Frenchman has a good knack of scoring goals by arriving late in the box. He managed to score ten goals across all competitions during his debut season, which is a very handy output from a midfielder.

Adding more goals to the team is always handy, so keeping Tolisso can turn out to be a good decision for Die Roten, provided he remains fit throughout the campaign. Apart from goals, Tolisso also brings tenacity to the team, which should bode well for Flick since he wants his team to press aggressively.

Next. Bayern Munich will have to move quickly to sign Sergino Dest. dark

After a promising debut season, Corentin Tolisso was expected to get even better in 2018. An unfortunate knee injury has halted his progress at the club, but he has the golden opportunity to get back to his best this season. It is an important season for Tolisso with Euros set to take place in summer. Considering the rigorous scheduling of games and Tolisso’s quality, there is a good chance that he ends up playing a big role in the team’s success this season.
