Bayern Munich is reportedly still trying to sign Ajax defender Sergino Dest.

Last summer’s transfer saga for Bayern Munich involved Manchester City winger Leroy Sane. They avoided a similar situation by signing Sane at the start of July. With signing Tanguy Kouassi from Paris Saint-Germain, it felt like Die Roten wanted to complete business quickly. However, the right-back pursuit, most particularly that of Sergino Dest, has been dragging for weeks.

The European champions are eager to add a right-back to the squad since there is no cover for Benjamin Pavard. Joshua Kimmich can play in that position, but he prefers playing in the midfield. Next season, Kimmich’s will be much more vital in midfield since Thiago Alcantara is set to leave the club this summer.

Hansi Flick publicly requested the club to sign a right-back in January. Die Roten decided to sign Alvaro Odriozola on a six-month loan deal from Real Madrid. The Spanish right-back has returned to the club after struggling to get fruitful playing time in Bavaria.

According to multiple reports, Bayern did try to sign Sergino Dest from Ajax. The young full-back later went on to confirm the German club’s interest. Dest was heavily linked after the winter window was shut and it felt that he will be first to get through the door when the summer transfer window opens. The latest update from Germany suggests that this move could soon materialize.

More from Bayern Strikes

As per SportBild’s Christian Falk, Bayern Munich are in talks with Ajax for signing Dest this summer. He also insists that Dest is subject to interest from Spain. It remains to be seen whether the big three from Spain are showing interest or other clubs in La Liga.

Dest fits the bill for the type of full-back Die Roten wants this summer. He is an attacking full-back that likes to venture forward and contribute in the final third. The youngster will bring something different in this position compared to Pavard. The only downside of this move for Dest is that he will get more playing time in Amsterdam next season compared to Bavaria. He will need time to settle and have strong competition from Pavard.

Ajax reportedly wanted €30 million for Dest in January. That fee can certainly be brought down since pandemic has affected the finances of clubs across Europe. The Dutch club reduced the transfer fee for Donny Van de Beek, so the signs are positive for Die Roten to get Dest for a decent fee.

Apart from Dest, the German champions have also been linked with Norwich City defender Max Aarons. Rekordmeister are set to start the Bundesliga title defense next weekend, so a right-back before the game against Schalke would be ideal.
