Bayern Munich defender set to be on sidelines after suffering a muscle injury.

The international break generally brings bad news regarding injuries for Bayern Munich on most occasions. Ahead of the start of the new campaign, Die Roten suffered a blow as Tanguy Kouassi suffered a thigh injury with the French U-20 squad.

The German champions provided an update on the injury, but they didn’t disclose the recovery period. Bild in Germany suggests that Kouassi is likely to be out for six weeks, missing the first DFB Pokal game and few Bundesliga games.

Kouassi joined Die Roten at the start of July on a free transfer from Paris-Saint Germain. The Frenchman was training with fellow new arrivals- Leroy Sane and Alexander Nubel when the team was playing in the Champions League last month.

The Frenchman would have been in line for his debut against Schalke in the Bundesliga on September 19. He will have to wait for more than a month to get that opportunity. Not an ideal start for him, but he will be grateful that it is not a very severe injury.

More from Bayern Strikes

The European champions had rotten luck with injuries in defense last season. Niklas Sule was out for almost ten months after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in October. The German defender recovered in time to feature in the knockout games of the Champions League in Lisbon.

Lucas Hernandez also consistently struggled with injuries during his debut campaign in Munich. The French defender was not able to cement his place in the lineup due to these injury problems. Benjamin Pavard suffered an ankle injury just before the game against Chelsea last month. He returned to action in few days, featuring against Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Die Roten have missed important players in the past few seasons during knockout games in the Champions League. The rescheduling of the competition last campaign due to the coronavirus pandemic helped Hansi Flick as he had a complete squad available on their road to the final.

Flick will be hoping that Die Roten will have better luck with injuries this season as fixtures are going to pile up due to a tough schedule. Bundesliga has kept five substitutes for the next campaign, so that will help in managing the workload of the players. The European champions began their pre-season training on Tuesday as players arrived at Sabner Strasse for the first time since winning the Champions League two weeks ago.
