Bayern Munich: Robert Lewandowski opens up on Ballon d’Or debate
Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski addresses Ballon d’Or debate.
When France Football announced last month that they would not be awarding Ballon d’Or this year due to coronavirus pandemic, Bayern Munich expressed their frustration. The club had a genuine candidate to win this award in Robert Lewandowski.
Since then, the case for Polish striker to win the award became even stronger as Die Roten went on to clinch the Champions League title in Lisbon. The German club became the second European club to complete a treble for the second time in their history.
Lewandowski has been one of the best forwards in Europe during the past four seasons, but for the first time, he was undisputed best for a complete season this year. He is likely to win UEFA and FIFA awards for best players this season, but Ballon d’Or is the prized award that every player craves for in their career.
In an interview with Sportowe Fakty (via Bundesliga.com), Lewandowski admitted that he was not thinking about France Football’s decision to cancel the Ballon d’Or ceremony this year. However, Poland international insisted that he would have been deserved winner due to his personal and collective achievements last season.
"“We won everything there was to be won. I was the top scorer in every competition. I think if a player has achieved that much, he should win the Ballon d’Or.”"

Lewandowski also expressed his happiness about finally winning the Champions League. He came close to winning the trophy in 2013 with Borussia Dortmund, but his team suffered defeat against Die Roten in the final. After moving to Bavaria, he suffered disappointments in the knockout rounds consistently.
The Polish striker played a decisive role in the European competition, scoring 15 goals in 11 games. He was previously criticised for not turning up for big games in Europe, but he stepped up this season with vital contributions against some of the best clubs in Europe. Moreover, his all-round game has also shown remarkable improvement this year.
Lewandowski was agitating for a move away from Bavaria two years ago. However, the club’s persistence to keep him has reaped rewards for both parties. He committed his long term future to the club at the start of last season. The clarity around his future also helped him to become the best forward in Europe and win the Champions League.
The former Borussia Dortmund striker is ageing like fine wine, so Bavarian fans can expect to keep up this level. Robert Lewandowski is eager to play at the top level for four more seasons. Considering his immaculate fitness and hunger for success, it is likely that he will be able to achieve this target. He might have missed on Ballon d’Or this season, but that can act as a motivation for him to keep delivering next season.
