Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is in touching distance with personal and team record in the CL.

After scoring against Lyon, Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is a goal closer to breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s single-season Champions League goalscoring record. Can he score three against Paris Saint-Germain?

It’s been nothing short of a terrific season for Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker has produced incredible numbers during the course of the 2019-20 campaign. In the UEFA Champions League alone, he’s managed to score a goal in every single fixture he’s played in during Bayern Munich’s run to the tournament final.

Entering Sunday’s final against Paris Saint-Germain, Lewandowski has the opportunity to better Cristiano Ronaldo’s single-season Champions League goalscoring record of 17 goals. The Portuguese star achieved this accomplishment during the 2013-14 season and has also recorded seasons of 15 and 16 goals in the competition. Lewandowski currently has 15 goals and is tied for third place with Ronaldo for the most successful goalscoring season.

A hat-trick is needed

If Lewandowski is to accomplish this personal achievement he will need to score a hat-trick against PSG. This will take a monumental performance from the striker and would certainly be one of the biggest moments of his career. It will not be an easy task to complete. PSG are not a club that have let in many goals during this season’s Champions League.

Despite the tough competition that awaits him on Sunday, he has shown himself capable of scoring multiple goals in a single match before. The infamous five-goal performance against Wolfsburg was one of his better known moments and a similar display will be needed if he is to claim the record.

In this season alone, he’s recorded three goals or more in two matches. One of those was in the Champions League group stage against Red Star Belgrade where he scored four goals. Needless to say, what is being asked will require him to put together a once in a lifetime performance.

Tying the record the more likely scenario

Scoring three goals against PSG will be incredibly tough to complete. For this reason, it’s more likey Lewandowski has a better chance of tying Ronaldo’s record of 17 goals as opposed to bettering it. Having produced 12 two-goal performances in all competitions this season, Lewandowski seems statistically more likely to score a brace then a hat-trick.

Tying Ronaldo’s record would still be an impressive accomplishment and would go down as one of the best individual season performances in Champions League history. Lewandowski has already shown he is one of the best strikers of his generation. This achievement would be another example of the quality and consistency he’s displayed during his incredible career.
