 Memphis Depay vs Jerome Boateng

After a tough spell at Manchester United a few years ago, Memphis Depay has got himself going at Lyon. The Dutch forward has become the talisman of the squad, leading the side on the pitch against Manchester City last weekend.

Depay has been operating as the second striker in Rudi Garcia’s 3-5-2 system. The Dutchman can hold the ball up front and dominate central defenders. It is an important attribute for Lyon against sides that will give them less possession. He is also a threat from set-pieces due to his immense striking ability.

The 26-year-old forward currently has six goals to his name in the Champions League this season. He was not on the scoresheet against Man City, but he helped Lyon to keep the ball for longer periods in the final third. Despite missing the majority of the campaign due to serious knee injury, Depay has managed to score 15 goals across all competitions. (Stats courtesy: Whoscored)

More from Bayern Strikes

Jerome Boateng had a mixed outing against Barcelona. He did make some goal-saving blocks, but he was at fault for Barcelona’s second goal. The German defender is likely to continue in defense on Wednesday due to his consistent performances in the second half of the season.

Boateng will have to set the tone of the battle with Depay by winning duels early in the game. The German defender will have to be smart with his positioning since the Dutchman has the pace to burn. Winning this battle will make sure that Die Roten limit the number of chances in the final third for Lyon.
