Hansi Flick speaks up about the style of play he wants to see at Bayern Munich.

It has been a whirlwind year for Hansi Flick. The journey started as an assistant coach last summer as he joined Niko Kovac’s staff after leaving the setup of the German national team. The start of the campaign didn’t go well for Bayern Munich, leading to the sacking of Niko Kovac in November.

Flick was given the reigns of the team as the club looked for a new manager. The impressive wins against Olympiakos and Borussia Dortmund in his first week as manager earned him more time in this role. He had time till Christmas to prove himself and get the chance to see out the season.

The German manager suffered a few bumps against Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach. His players recovered well and ended Hinrunde four points behind RB Leipzig in the table. Die Roten decided to stick with Flick for the rest of the campaign.

Since December, Flick and Die Roten have not looked back, going on a strong run of form to complete a domestic double. The German champions were playing a high-intensity style of football. In a candid interview with Sport1 this week, Flick spoke about the type of football he wants his team to play consistently.

"“Defensively to win the ball – and offensively, purposefully and consistently to scoring goals. The intensity of our actions is crucial. We also want to play attractive possession football.”“The most important thing is that we see ourselves as a team and that everyone knows what their task is. Every player has to get involved and be able to rely on his neighbor on the pitch. This is extremely important to us.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Die Roten is currently playing with swagger, dominating big teams away from home. They don’t crumble under pressure and manage to maintain intense pressing till the final whistle. The game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in February further highlighted the improvement of the team under Flick.

Along with consistency in performances, Rekordmeister is also enjoying consistent results. The German champions are yet to lose a game in 2020. They dropped points only on one occasion during the second half of the season. Die Roten are scoring freely and becoming a much stronger defensive unit.

Flick has managed to improve almost every player in the current squad. The German manager has got the best out of Thomas Muller, who was contemplating a move away from the club in October due to lack of playing time under Kovac. Jerome Boateng has also enjoyed a resurgence under Flick after struggling to get regular minutes at the start of the season.

Courtesy of their form in 2020, the German champions are favourites to lift the Champions League trophy this season. They are tactically flexible, which is a testament to Flick’s work with the squad. Barring a disaster against Chelsea on Saturday, they should be going to Portugal for the rest of the games in the Champions League. Flick has transformed this side in a short space of time, and a CL win further cement his stamp on the style of play Die Roten is currently playing.
