Bayern Munich remain interested in Barcelona midfielder

Bayern Munich are interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Pedri Gonzalez.

There is likely to be a good balance in terms of arrivals and departures at Bayern Munich this summer. The German club has already completed two transfers, but they reportedly remain in the market for a midfielder and right-back. Meanwhile, there could be close to five departures, including players that arrived at the club on loan deals.

For the midfield acquisition, Die Roten has been linked with numerous midfielders in the past couple of weeks. The latest report in Germany suggests that Bundesliga Champions could do business with Barcelona to sign an exciting midfield talent.

According to Sky Sports, Bayern remain interested in signing Pedri Gonzalez from Barcelona. The young midfielder is also subject to interest from Borussia Monchengladbach. This report insists that Gladbach is leading the race for the young creative midfielder since they have made a two-year loan deal.

Pedri has been linked heavily with Die Roten in the past few weeks. In mid-July, Sky (via Mundo Deportivo) insisted that the German Champions are strongly interested in signing Pedri. The young midfielder did tell Sport that he dreams about proving himself at Barcelona in the upcoming season.

The Spanish midfielder was on loan at Las Palmas last season. He impressed with his performances in Spain’s second division, scoring four goals in the competition. Mainly operating as attacking midfielder, Pedri can also operate on either flank. (Stats courtesy: Whoscored)

Pedri is a talented young midfielder, who needs to play regularly to continue his development. He is unlikely to get that in Munich. The Spaniard may have to play for the reserves to get minutes under his belt. All these factors regarding playing time make this move unlikely from the player’s perspective. A move to Gladbach would serve him better.

Moreover, Die Roten need a direct replacement for Thiago, a midfielder who can be the link between midfield and attack. The Spaniard also helped Rekordmeister to control the tempo of the game against teams that were pressing aggressively. Pedri doesn’t fit this profile, so making a temporary move for him now doesn’t make sense.

The German champions could also do with relying on Mickael Cuisance and Adrian Fein instead of signing new midfielders. Cuisance had a strong end to the domestic campaign while Fein excelled during his loan spell at Hamburg. Since Die Roten has ruled out big-money transfers, any midfielder arriving at the club is likely to be a left-field signing.
