Bayern Munich is doing everything possible to keep David Alaba at the club.

David Alaba is once again the talk of the town. The recent reports in Germany hinted that Bayern Munich are struggling to agree with wage demands of the defender to extend his contract. Alaba currently has less than 12 months left on his current deal.

The Austrian defender is attracting interest from top clubs across Europe despite the negative impact on the market due to the coronavirus pandemic. Alaba is also giving little away publicly as he is currently focussing on winning a second Champions League title with Die Roten.

Despite hitting a stumbling block in negotiations, Die Roten will be hoping to reach an agreement with him after the season is concluded. When a club is eager to keep a player, they keep stressing on the importance of the player in media. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had some glowing words to say about Alaba on Friday.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Rummenigge admitted that Alaba had become the leader in the defence this season. He insisted that the club is eager to secure his future, keeping Alaba at the club throughout his career. The club president went on to compare Alaba to Franz Beckenbauer.

"“It was born out of necessity that he had to play at centre-back because we had several injuries, and then Hansi put him in this position.”“He did it with flying colours. We haven’t had a ‘chief’ in defence for some time now, one who really takes the reins in hand and sets the tone there and simply acts as the head of the defensive unit – he did that.”"

The praise from the chairman may further strengthen Alaba’s stance to get the desired contract. The Austrian defender is crucial to the way Flick wants his team to dominate games. Alaba has been solid defensively, having the pace and sound positioning to cope with any type of forward.

In terms of building attacking moves from the back, Alaba is one of the best in the world. His passing allows Die Roten to break lines from a deeper position and trouble the opposition by moving the ball quicker. With all these important qualities of a modern-day defender, Alaba also boasts a good record from set-pieces. He scored a sublime freekick against Bayer Leverkusen in DFB Pokal final this season.

Rummenigge has put the ball in Alaba’s court by praising him in the media. Since he came through the ranks of the academy at the club, Die Roten is even more eager to keep him. His importance to the side is much more than someone like Thiago Alcantara, who is also entering the final year of the contract, but the club is open to selling him this summer.
