Bayern Munich defender JBoateng keeps doors open for Premier League move.

The defensive overhaul at Bayern Munich took place last summer with arrivals of Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez. As a part of this overhaul, Mats Hummels left the club to join Borussia Dortmund, while Jerome Boateng was also expected to part ways with the German champions.

Boateng was subject to late interest from Juventus at the end of the transfer window. However, the deal didn’t go through, and Boateng ended up staying at the club. The German defender’s decision to stay in Bavaria turned out to be decisive for Hansi Flick.

After the departure of Niko Kovac, Die Roten suffered injury problems in defence. The injury crisis led to opportunities for Boateng in starting XI. He didn’t let Flick down and delivered consistent performances during the second half of the season. Boateng even moved ahead Hernandez in the pecking order when the French defender recovered from his injury.

Boateng has entered the final year of his contract at Die Roten. There will be speculation surrounding his future despite his impressive performances this season. Speaking to CGTN sports (via Goal), Boateng refused to closed doors to a move back to Premier League in the future.

"“I wouldn’t say no. I love watching the Premier League and I loved playing there. It helped me a lot to train with world-class players.”“I don’t know what will happen next. You never know but it’s not like I would say that I don’t want to play there. It’s definitely one of my favourite leagues.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Boateng had previously played in the Premier League for Manchester City. However, his stay was not fruitful and he moved to Bayern Munich in 2011. The German defender formed the solid foundation of the team that went on to win an unprecedented treble in Germany. In the last few seasons, his performance levels dropped as teams exploited his weaknesses.

The German international had the opportunity to move back to the Premier League in 2018.  Manchester United had reportedly made a bid for the veteran defender, but Boateng rejected the transfer. He reportedly wanted to join Paris Saint-Germain that summer, but both clubs couldn’t reach an agreement regarding transfer fee.

Boateng has responded strongly to criticism this season by helping the team to win the domestic double. Courtesy of a good campaign, there have been reports in Germany suggesting that he could end up seeing out his contract at the club.

Bayern has made it clear that they will not allow players to leave the club for nothing. They are set to listen to offers for Thiago Alcantara after the Spaniard rejected an improved contract offer. However, the case of Boateng could be different due to the lack of suitors. The German defender could play in England, but that is unlikely to happen next season.
