Former coach backs Davies to become a key player for Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich players have enjoyed a tremendous season individually and collectively. There have been some standout performers for the team throughout the domestic campaign. Alphonso Davies has been one of these players that have delivered week in week out.

The Canadian winger started slowly as he was getting minute from the bench or play regularly in the reserves team. An injury crisis in defence turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Davies in October. Niko Kovac decided to move David Alaba in defence and deploy Davies in the left-back position.

Since this switch in position, there was no looking back for Davies. He went from strength to strength, getting better with every passing game. The Canadian forward managed to feature heavily for Die Roten and win the Rookie of the year award in the Bundesliga.

Rekordmeister has always kept faith in Davies as Hasan Salihamidzic tipped him to be a big part of the club’s future. Carl Robinson, former Vancouver Whitecaps manager, is backing Davies to become one of the top players in Europe. Speaking to Stats Perform News (via Bundesliga.com), Robinson also admitted that Davies’ career story till now is inspiring.

"“He is a fantastic, talented young boy. Now it’s about consistency because after having a very good year at left-back, which was key for his development, then he has to do it next year and the year after.“Then, he can be put into the category of the Gareth Bales, Ashley Coles, the top players like that all over the world. That will be his next challenge but I firmly believe he can do it because he’s a good kid.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Davies is currently considered as one of the best young full-backs in Europe. His recovery pace is an asset while defending and going forward. With an ample amount of playing time under his belt, he has managed to improve his positioning. By the end of the campaign, one can rely on Davies to deliver minimum 7/10 performance every week.

Apart from domestic competitions, Davies also shone in European games. His assist against Chelsea in February showed all his good qualities. He can still do better in the final third by showing composure to find his teammates in the box, but his growth has been quick and staggering in the past eight months.

Davies prefers to play as a forward in future, but it will take something extraordinary to see him move out of the left-back role. Rekordmeister decided to reward his performances with a new contract in April. Davies has also settled well in new country and league, making the transfer look like a real steal in hindsight.

There are doubts about the future of Alaba in Bavaria. The Austrian full-back has been tight-lipped about his future at the club. The emergence of Davies may have come at the right time for Die Roten as he can become the long term replacement of Alaba in the left-back role. Sky is the limit for the teenager after taking massive strides in his full season at the club.
