Bayern Munich is one of many clubs interested in Lyon’s young full-back.

Even before ending the domestic campaign, Bayern Munich had started preparing for next season. They have already completed the signings of Tanguy Kouassi, Alexander Nubel, and Leroy Sane. Die Roten will be still in the market for a couple of signings.

However, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge insisted last week that no big-money signings should be expected after Sane’s arrival due to financial impacts of the pandemic. The German club may look at younger players to secure the future as they will arrive at the club for a nominal fee.

After signing Kouassi on a free transfer, Die Roten is also eyeing a move for another French starlet. According to L’Equipe, Bayern is interested in Lyon’s promising left-back Melvin Bard. This report insists that Die Roten were impressed by Bard’s performances in UEFA Youth League. The German club initially wants to offer the French full-back opportunity in the reserves before leaping into the first team.

Bard has featured only once for the senior team at Lyon this season. His current contract is set to expire in 2022, so Lyon will have good leverage to demand a good fee for the defender. Apart from Die Roten, various Ligue 1 clubs are interested in bringing Bard at their club next season. (Stats and contract info: Transfermarkt)

More from Bayern Strikes

In the first team, Rekordmeister currently has the left-back position covered. Alphonso Davies has enjoyed a breakthrough camapaign in this role for Die Roten. David Alaba and Lucas Hernandez can also play in this position, but their long term future lies in central defence.

Currently, there is speculation surrounding the future of Alaba. The Austrian defender has only one year left on his contract. If he decides against signing a new deal, then the German club may cash in this summer. In a possible scenario of his departure, Hernandez will get more minutes in central defence. Bard may get called up to the senior team to provide cover for Davies.

This is a commendable approach adapted by Die Roten since transfer market is set to be badly affected due to pandemic. Getting the best young players will help the club to achieve their medium and long term goals. Moreover, there is very less financial risk in such transfers.

The success of Davies will further encourage Rekordmeister to continue with this approach in the transfer market. There is still a lot of work to do to sign Bard as the report suggests that the interest is yet to materialize into bids. Having said that, Bayern fans have every right to be excited about such type of transfers.
