Bayern Munich squad has an elite mentality

One talking point under former coach Niko Kovac was that Bayern needed to be tougher mentally and that they needed to show passion and play 100 percent every match. The problem was that the tactics weren’t lining up with what the players expected and wanted to do. It was difficult for the players to give 100% when they weren’t buying into what the coach wanted.

When Hansi Flick took over and adjusted the way Bayern played so that they controlled the game more, it was easy for the players to buy-in. This became apparent over the past couple matches, where there was heavy rotation, and still, the Bayern machine rolled on.

After Bayern won the league, one wouldn’t blame them if they took their foot off the gas and eased out the rest of the season. That is exactly what did not happen. It is a true testament of how the team plays and where the coach has got them mentally. Tactics and the way a team plays matter and if the team is more talented than their opponents every week, they need to buy into that mentally and show that they are best. Flick has been able to achieve that and unlock that special Mia San Mia mentality.

These last couple of weeks also show where other team’s mentalities are in comparison. Even though Dortmund finished in second and their battle against Bayern is what sealed that fate, their performance recently has been deeply discouraging for a team that is supposed to be rivals to Die Roten. Mentally, Bayern are miles ahead of every other Bundesliga team. If they are to be challenged, that needs to change. Other teams are capable of it, but right now, it does not look like anyone will catch the Rekordmeister anytime soon.
