Jupp Heynckes

Bayern enjoyed the best season in their season during the 2012/13 campaign. Die Roten became the first German club to win a treble in a season, which included Bundesliga title, DFB Pokal, and UEFA Champions League. Jupp Heynckes was the man to lead them to the pinnacle of Europe after coming close to achieving the feat in 2011/12.

Heynckes is fondly remembered as a prolific striker in Germany, mostly for Borussia Monchengladbach. However, Bayern fans remember him for his managerial skill. The club appointed Heynckes as their manager in 1987 for the first time. He guided the club to two Bundesliga titles and two DFL Supercups before being axed in 1991.

The German manager came out of retirement for the first time to manage Die Roten in 2009. He managed the club on an interim basis till the end of the campaign as Jurgen Klinsmann was sacked midway through the season. The club hierarchy decided to go ahead with appointing him permanently in 2011.

Heynckes guided the team to CL final in 2012, but his team suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the penalty shootout against Chelsea at Allianz Arena. However, Bayern responded brilliantly in the following season, playing some of the best football in Europe.

More from Bayern Strikes

The 7-0 win on aggregate against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final saw the best performance delivered by Die Roten in knockout rounds of the European competition. Bayern was ruthless in the attack under Heynckes. He was thoroughly liked in the dressing room, so players loved working under him.

Heynckes returned to the club after Carlo Ancelotti was sacked in 2018. He helped in reviving the club’s sinking season and guided them to the Bundesliga title. The German manager has seen ups and downs during his time at Bayern, but he will easily go down as the most successful manager in the club’s history.
