Thomas Muller

Thomas Muller was struggling to get playing time under Niko Kovac this season. There were reports in Germany hinting that Muller could contemplate a move away from Bavaria in the winter transfer window. Muller also publicly expressed frustration about sitting on the bench every game under Kovac.

Fortunately for Muller, he never had to think about finding a new club as Hansi Flick’s appointment provided him the opportunity to break into the starting XI. The German forward grabbed this chance with both hands and delivered consistent performances in November and December.

After the winter break, Muller continued the superb form. He has been playing his best football since Pep Guardiola’s departure in 2016. The German forward featured in almost every game in Ruckrunde. Muller’s role in the current set up cannot be just reduced to goals and assists. He helps in stretching defenses with his clever movement, which eventually helps in creating space for other forwards.

However, Muller has contributed to goals and assists consistently during Ruckrunde. The German forward has scored five goals and racked up five assists in 11 games across all competitions. He has created havoc in the final third, helping Die Roten to dismantle teams with ease. (Stats Courtesy: Whoscored)

It is not a big coincidence that Bayern is playing some of the best football in Europe when Muller has been at his best. The German forward has once again established himself as a key player in the team. Die Roten rewarded his performances with a new contract a couple of weeks ago.
