Bayern Munich’s teen defender linked with top European clubs
Bayern Munich defender Chris Richards is attracting interest from various European clubs.
The recruitment at the youth level has been impressive for Bayern Munich in the last two summer transfer windows. Die Roten have followed an aggressive approach to get some of the best young talents from different parts of the globe.
After signing these young players, Rekordmeister needs to focus on slowly integrating into the first team. If they fail to do so, then these players will look for a transfer soon since many top clubs will keep a close eye on their situation.
Chris Richards is one of the many bright players in the reserves team. The 20-year-old defender has been excelling for the youth team, which eventually caught the eye of Hansi Flick. The German manager included Richards in the squad that trained in Doha during the winter break.
Richards has been reportedly attracting interest from various elite clubs in Europe. According to Bild, Chelsea and Arsenal are interested in signing the young defender. This report also confirms that Barcelona and Valencia are also monitoring Richards’ situation in Bavaria.

Die Roten don’t have to worry about Richards as of now due to his long contract with the club. His current deal is set to expire at the end of the 2022/23 season. The interested clubs will have to pay a hefty fee if they plan to sign Richards in summer.
The 20-year-old center-back joined Bayern on loan from FC Dallas in 2018. After impressing during the trial period, Rekordmeister decided to take up the option of signing him permanently. He has been a mainstay in the reserves team this year, making 22 appearances in the team and scoring two goals in the third division. (Stats courtesy: Whoscored)
Richards is on the right path of his development, but he will not be patient for a long time. Die Roten have to make sure that they have the right plan for the young defender. At the moment, one more season in the reserves team and then maybe a loan move to a Bundesliga club will help him to continue his progress.
The transfer market is going to become more complicated due to the ongoing pandemic. Rekordmeister will have to rely on young players in the next couple of seasons if they fail to land their top targets. In such a scenario, it is unlikely that Die Roten will allow young players to leave and join top European clubs.
